City to Cut Chamber Funds

The Mayor's proposed amended city budget for the year ending June 2005 has several interesting cuts and increases, but the one having a direct impact on the Chamber is the one to decrease Chamber funding from $9600 per year to $8000.

The city currently pays the Chamber $800 monthly for economic development services. The money comes from the economic development fund. And the EDF is fed with 2.5% of the total sales tax from the town's businesses. Total sales tax is roughly $1.5 million.

Chamber President, Fran Kraus, has written a letter to the Mayor, and Councilmen objecting to this anti-business move. She suggests that Chamber members do the same or call.

Should this amendment pass, the Chamber would be forced to increase dues to its members or layoff staff. Dues do not cover the cost of running the Chamber office. The Chamber relies on fund raisers, which are notoriously unreliable. Its main sources of revenue are the Spring Golf Tournament and the Bon Appetit. A secondary source of revenue is the money generated from the Chamber News ads.

Current City funding for other organizations includes; $12,000 per year to the Arts Council: $2,055 to TEDF (Tangi Economic Development Foundation): $7,020 to the Parish Animal Shelter and $6,500 to Senior Citizens.

The public hearing and vote will be held on Mon,. March 14 at 7pm at City Hall. Come to the meeting or call to protest:

Mayor Goldsby - 748-9039

Mayor Thwarts Beautification Efforts

Mayor Reggie Goldsby ordered the Chamber to move the planters from the downtown district or have them removed by city workers, according to Fran Kraus, Chamber President, after a phone call from Pris Gallagher, Asst. Administrator to the Mayor. This must action is a result of recent business owner complaints or how many were received. Forty-seven metal planters were placed by the Chamber in April 2004 after getting approval from Ms. Gallagher, who conferred with the Mayor. The Chamber had submitted pictures prior to commencing the project.

One day after placing them along Oak St. and Central Ave., the Mayor threatened to remove them if the Chamber did not paint them "green or something". Kraus felt that a painted surface would be harder to maintain. After some negotiation, the Mayor agreed to give the planters a chance. The subject was not broached again during that election year.

Not long ago the Chamber decided to soften the shininess of the metal with "antiquing" effect. However, due to poor weather, it has not been done. Also, since the plants had gotten off to an unhealthy start with an unreliable maintenance firm, the Chamber planned to use additional Spring plantings to revitalize the bedraggled planters. "It takes patience, persistence and loving care to make things grow", Kraus said. "Not everyone has the vision to see what things could be."

After suggesting a regrouping of the planters, Ms. Gallagher told Ms. Kraus that Mayor Goldsby would "give it a try" to place them only on Central Ave. and on Mulberry St.. However, "due to the fickle nature of the Mayor, I feel it's best to sell as many as possible," said Kraus. "It's a shame. We were waiting for the final frost, ordering additional flowers...and the 'Cleanest City' judges loved them so last year. This is just one more reason why people don't want to come to Amite," Kraus said.

Calling all picnickers to Coach Catha park. Come out to eat lunch and enjoy the
beautiful day along with some fresh air.

Chamber Successful in Grant Seeking

Vicky Cavaretta, Board member, has written two grants requesting funding for Coach Catha Park improvements. Pris Gallagher, Asst. to the Mayor, is administering the first one, which is for $1,200. The check was presented to the Mayor by Entergy's customer service rep. Craig Schimpf on Feb.1. Remodeling of the chapel there has begun by city worker Randy Russell.

Most grantors require a 501(C)3 non-profit or government entity to administer their grants. The Chamber is a 501(C)6 - a private non-profit servicing business interests. 501(C)3's service health, education or welfare.

The second grant is approved for $2,500. It goes to committee for final approval this week. Our thanks to Vicky for her hard work and persistence. Our thanks also to Pris for looking out for funds and their intended use.

April 5 Deadline to Voice Board Objection

Two new members will be added to the Board if the membership does not disapprove. They are Debra Purvis, Branch Manager for AmSouth Bank and Fleming Trosclair, President of Access Able Designs. Both will bring fresh ideas and vigor to the Chamber Board. Martha Foulks will retire and Fran Kraus will step down as President. The new Board will choose its officers. However, the officers cannot be new,.

Since new Board members are needed, only objections will be cast instead of votes. This procedure was instituted last year due to lack of volunteers. Had there been lots of candidates, the number of votes descending order would determine their success. However, in our situation, the persons with any votes would win.

Mail objections anonymously to the office by April 5.
