Their actions included:
The first world war was the most important reason that women were able to get the vote. It gave them job opportunities that they never dreamed of having before or weren't even ALLOWED before. Women were now able to work in "skilled" jobs - these were professional, hard working jobs that would finally be able to prove their ability. This was due to all the men being called up to go to war. The jobs were given to women but men strongly disagreed to women workers - they didnt want women to look better than them!!!! They may have been concerned that women would come out on top and be more skilled and hard working. It was one of the steps to equality and men did not like that. Some men even went as far as to go on strike to stop women working. Only what they didn't realise was that women were desperately needed in the working industry. Unfortunately some women were discouraged from working but there were many more who became determined to work!
Women went into industries such as: engineering, munition, grave digging, carpenting, painting vehicles, drivers and other proffesions. Although women were now able to work in these jobs, their working conditions were terrible! The medical officers were of poor quality and the air in the factory was no better. The women were not dressed properly for the job either.
Conditions were especially bad in munition factories. Many illness came from working in such places like: phossy jaw (a form of bone cancer), swelling, coughs, lung infections and burns from working with the explosives. Eventually the rules had to be changed. But not only were the medical condition rules in need of changing, so were the working hour rules. Women had to work ridiculously long hours and they still got paid less than men! Although they didn't copmplain much because they were glad to have their new place in society.. Also they had toi work harder than before because there was a greater demand for weapony during the war compared to before.
Due to all of this though, women became more independant and more determined than ever to get the vote. And the country had to realise that women were an inportant factor to the industry and they were desperately needed. Women proved themselves capable to a wide range of jobs, which soon resulted in them getting the vote.
There are two types of protests: violent and non-violent.
Both the suffragettes and suffragists used non-violent protests but only the suffragettes used violent ones
Non- violent
There were two types of prostests: violent and non-violent. The non-violent protests were carried out by both the suffragettes and suffragists. But the violent protests were only carried out by the Suffragettes (since the suffragists didn't believe in using violence.)
Examples of non-violent protests:
Violent
The other type of protest was to use violence. The suffragettes used this kind because they felt that peaceful protests didn't let them demonstrate
how serious they were about getting what they wanted. Also they thought that it was a much more effective way to get their vote because the peaceful
protests could be ignored more easily. That is why the suffragettes motto was:
"deeds not words"
