For a long time scientists believed in vitalism, this means they believed that organisms had a force that assembles compounds that science couldn't do in a lab, was later proven wrong.

Fredrich Wöhler questioned the idea of vitalism and though his experiments didn't imedaitly disproved vitalism wich started a chain of experiments with other scientists. Eventually vitalism was disproven.
