The Republic of the Philippines archipelago has about 7,100 islands and islets lying about 500 miles southeast coast of Asia. This country has a total land area of 11,800 sq. mi. and is bounded by the Philippines Sea to the east, the Celebes Sea to the south, and the South China Sea to the west and north.

The Capital of this country is Manila, with a population of 30 million people. The total population of the Philippines is 70 million. Its archipelago runs 1,150 miles from north to south and 700 miles from east to west at its widest extent.

The Philippines has a coastline of more than 21,500 miles. A prominent feature of the country is the irregular configuration of the archipelago with mountains, plains, rivers and inland lakes. The islands are composed of volcanic, coral and rock formations.

Volcanoes are a distinct feature of the Philippine landscape. Of the 50 volcanoes in the Philippines only 10 are known to be active. The most famous is Mount Pinatubo, which erupted in mid-1991 and more recently in 2001.
