What is it?

The Mezzeh Institute is a school run by the Syrian community. It is a school for children with mental disabilities. They teach the children the usual things such as writing and reading, but they also try to develop the children’s ability to co-ordinate their movements through sports. Many people are not aware that mental development can be stimulated through physical activities.

What can you do?

At the Mezzeh institute you can help out by supervising the kids during a “PE” class. (You will often join in with them) Most often you will play soccer or catch with the children. Or you could help out during an art class, where you help with the kids and also talk with them (you do not need to speak Arabic). This is a great activity to go to because the children are very enthusiastic and like seeing “new people”. The kids enjoy themselves and so can you, while you are collecting community service hours!

When can you do it?

A group of 2-4 people go to the institute every Saturday. We meet at school around 10.15 and stay at the institute until 11.30 or 12.00. If you want to go you can tell an NHS member, Mr. Scullion, or Mrs. Mesmar and we will make arrangements with you.
