There once lived a rabbit family named "The English Family" that lived a long time ago, when the land was still wild and free. They came to America from a faraway land called England. They came to Texas in a covered wagon. They were a happy family, the husband, his wife, son and daughter. Why were they so happy you ask? It was because of their ears which stood tall and erect. Everywhere they went, everyone would comment on their beautiful ears. They finally settled on a nice piece of land near a town called Fort Worth. They were happy to find their new home. They started right away building a quaint little home. Then they built a barn and a coral for the few livestock they owned. About this time they noticed that their ears started dropping, it made them nervous. They thought maybe it was because they had been working too hard, so they decided to take the next day off. The next day, to their surprise, their ears hung down past their shoulders. They were embarrassed by the condition of their ears so they covered them with hats. They then headed into town to see the doctor, going straight to the doctor's office when they arrived in town. After the last patient left, the doctor came out of his office. To their surprise, the doctor had lopped ears too! He was a big rabbit, tall and proud, and was the most kind. His ears hung down past his shoulders, not as long as the English family, but he acted as if he was proud of his ears! He had not a care in the world. When they thought about it, they felt silly for the way they had acted. Who cares that their ears hang down past their shoulders. They are still long, wide, and beautiful. The doctor came up to them, reached out his paw and gave them a hearty paw shake. He said, "I'm Dr. French, Dr. French Lop. What can I do for this fine family?" Mr. English hesitated, then took off his hat, and told the good doctor about their ear problem. When he was finished, the doctor looked at him and his family thoughtfully and said, "you say you have only lived here a little while? My good rabbit, don't you know you're in Texas now? Everything around here grows large! It is in the water, it's in the soil. Look at how large I am, I wasn't always this large. My ears weren't always that big. There is a family down the street, the Flemish Giants, they weren't always that big and there's another family, just outside of town, on a farm. They moved here a year ago, the Checkered Giants, they weren't always that large either. So take your hats off, hold your heads up; be proud - you're the English Lop family!" They did just as he said, and to their surprise, everyone thought their ears were even more beautiful then before. They came to be the first English Lops in Texas. Before long, there were more and more. They were happy, they were proud - they were the ENGLISH LOPS.
