Questions for media analysis

Who is the originator of the message?

The originator of this message is T.L.C. The message being conveyed is sex is part of the human nature. Among other things that are human, human combustion is in all capital bold writing. The ad asks the question “Are you human?”, with a girl kissing a guy in a very sexual position.

What techniques is the company using?

The company is using sex appeal with the girl whose shirt is falling off kissing the guy. They are using the sex appeal of a woman’s body to attract viewers and asking the question “Are you human.” The question seeming to have the meaning if you are human then you wouldn’t pass up a chance with this woman.

What is the motive of the ad?

The company was probably not intending to degrade anyone with this ad but instead were attempting to use the sex appeal of what they call human combustion (the girl on top of the guy kissing) to attract viewers. Such viewers would most likely be men but the has a small portion of the males face and could possibly be used to attract females.

What is the target audience?

The target audience is most likely male. With dominating picture of the women, with her shirt falling off from the side. There is a small portion of the mans head but not enough to make a women look. The picture of the couple shows mainly the women but both sexes are drawn into anything that is sexual or related to sexuality. The words HUMAN COMBUSTION are in bold print so even a woman might stop flipping through the magazine to look at this ad.

Is this ad accurate, fair, and complete?

This ad is pretty much intended for males. Although this company did a better job of not showing as much of the woman’s body as most ads do. Instead they used the term human combustion combined with the question. The question could be debated as not being fair. The Questions seems to ask or say if you are human you are going to go after this attractive lady. But such a statement in itself is not fair because it could be interpreted in many different ways. The company could simply be trying to use the appeal of plain sex to attract viewers knowing that both male and females alike are going to be drawn to anything with sex in it.
