Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary, is a Professor of Structural Organic Chemistry and Acting Director at H.E.J. Research Institute of Chemistry. He has written and edited 8 books, most of which have been published in USA and Europe. He is also the author of over 270 research papers and chapters in top international science journals of the West including Journal of American Chemical Society, Journal of Organic Chemistry, Tetrahedron, Journal of Chemical Society, etc. This is by far the largest number of quality publications from any scientist in Pakistan of his age group. Recently he was graded as the third best chemist in the nation based on the impact of his science publications (JIF) in a book “Leading Scientists of Pakistan” published by the Ministry of Science and Technology of Pakistan. He is the Volume Editor of an international book series, "Studies in Medicinal Chemistry" (the Netherlands) and Editor of an international Science journal, “Mini Reviews in Medicinal Chemistry” published from Amsterdam. He has served as visiting faculty and research associate in many prestigious universities of the world including Cornell University (New York), Purdue University (Indiana), Pennsylvania State University (Pennsylvania), the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (University of California at San Diego, California) and University of Barcelona, Spain. His work has resulted in a number of important scientific discoveries including the discovery of plant materials with pronounced antidiabetic, anti-epileptic and cholesterol-lowering activities. Over 300 new natural products including steroids, triterpenoids, alkaloids, flavones, etc. have been isolated from a variety of medicinal plants, sea alga, marine invertebrates and microorganisms by his research group. During this outstanding work, several new classes of natural products were discovered which expanded the knowledge of this important field of chemical sciences. Many of the structurally novel compounds isolated by Dr. Choudhary were found to have interesting pharmacological profiles and are in different stages of efficacy trials. He is also a pioneer of research in the fields of chemical defense system of marine invertebrates and inhibition of clinically important enzymes in Pakistan. He played an important role in the establishment of the tissue-culture section and the first X-ray diffraction, bioassay and enzymology laboratories in Pakistan at the H.E.J. Research Institute of Chemistry. His current research interests include search of natural enzyme inhibitors, microbial transformation of bioactive compounds, development of new bioassays and marine natural products chemistry. In recognition of his outstanding scientific contributions, he has been awarded with many prestigious national and international awards including prestigious Presidential award of Sitara-e-Imtiaz and Tamgha-e-Imtiaz, Prof. Abdus Salam Prize in Chemistry, Pakistan Academy of Sciences Gold Medal, National Book Foundation Prize and the Third World Academy of Sciences Young Scientist Prize.
