" Liana Studio VSP Tours Sri Lanka First Rising portrays the betrayals in the post-colonial era that led to an impasse. These kinds of writing meet the needs of the day."
-Prof. Thiru Kandiah, Gratiaen Awards, Colombo 1998-

The novel narrates the legend of a lower middle class family in Sri Lanka after the electoral victory of the first populist government of  S. W. R. D. Bandaranayaike in 1956. The decay and collapse of the family who lived in Kegalle district is portrayed in the background of turbulent post-colonial history. The story ends on the eve of the youth insurrection in 1971.

The novel is written on the eve of mankind entering the information age when Knowledge itself remains fragmented. Powerful media interests bathe a generation in trivia and bludgeon them to accept Brand Consciousness. First Rising is a reminder that social contradictions humanity underwent in the 20th Century within two world wars and the first Socialist Revolution remains unresolved in our midst. The novel is a beacon on troubled waters of post-colonial history of Sri Lanka. It has met with official resistance in publication assistance. National Library & Documentation services Board of Sri Lanka  has informed the author  that '...Publication Advisory Committee has not given approval for granting assistance for the publication of your manuscript in view of the controversial matter relating to the story  therein'

The strength of  'First Rising' is that it is a political novel without the author investing much effort into making it one consciously. The story here has not been told in English before and Wijesuriya's almost unconscious mastery of detail, whether it is about the present Buddhist background of his characters or the nuances of Marxist politics, makes one realize haw gauche and unreal some of these English language novelists aspiring to depict peasant life are. This novel has the touching air of a period piece. It is a final touching salute to the 1960s, the last days of an expiring age of innocence' - Aravinda, Daily News- October 10, 2001

'While endorsing most of our fellow columnist Aravinda said a week ago in his 'Arts note book' on the new novel titled 'First Rising' by Somachandre Wijesuriya, I do not intend to reiterate some of the factors once again. But I feel that the novel First Rising raises some of the finest and salient literary factors in the contemporary society both in the English and Sinhala writing today...In several ways the novelist Wijesuriya is a social philosopher and does not lament but present the pros and cons of a problem, and makes the reader feel that the protagonist he creates is so sensitive. The apex or the moment of illumination in the novel of Wijesuriya is the sad moment when an innocent individual Ramasamy is sentenced to death by the corrupt agents of a evil society'- Professor Sunanda Mahendra, Daily News -Oct 20, 2001

Somachandre Wijesuriya was born  on  November 18, 1941 during the Second World War. His  father was a clerical servant in the local government service of the British administration. Subsequently  he  was   employed  in  the private sector businesses  in Colombo. In the city he saw many social upheavals in the form of strikes  by  workers,   political  agitations  and an armed youth uprising.
