                           Lana's Ferret Picture Page

Welcome to my Australian Ferret page.  My name is Lana, and I live with my nine ferrets in Sydney Australia.  My ferrets are very much a part of my life and I love them like they were my own children.  To see my little ones, click on the picture below.

See a movie that will be changed every week.

I am currently inviting all people to send in photos of their ferrets.  I would love to see contributions from people all around the world.  Please post your contributions here

I have had my ferrets since they were born.  To see pictures of them as newborns, click the picture below.

                                                Living With Ferrets

Contrary to popular belief, people do not own ferrets... they own you.  The truth is that ferret "owners" are at the beck and call of their ferrets, who have a tendency to become very displeased if their wishes are not attended to immediately.  Repercussions can range from mild (biting) to severe ("protest poos", which are the ultimate punishment for tardy humans).

If you do not have the time to constantly look after your pet, and play with them, then a ferret is not right for you.

                                                Ferrets in Australia

In Australia, ferrets are still very much misunderstood and generally unknown.  Unlike the United States, Ferrets are not a popular pet.  In fact, in states such as Queensland, ferrets are are a banned animal.  It is hard to understand why some people have such negative perceptions about such loving and domesticated creatures.  Ferrets are one of the most affectionate of pets, and are very much dependent upon their owners for all their survival needs.  Ferrets will not survive in the wild, and it is for this reason that the concept of a 'feral ferret' is oxymoronic (i.e. nonsense).

The Importance of Neutering or Spaying Your Ferret

All our ferrets have been neutered or spayed.  If you are going to buy ferrets, I strongly urge you to have them neutered or spayed.  This helps prevent many of the diseases that ferrets are susceptible to (i.e. adrenal disorders, cancer of the reproductive organs etc).  Females which are not desexed are also at risk of death from anaemia, during the mating season.

Neutering your ferrets is not a trivial matter.  The cost associated with this is quite substantial, and you should consider this before buying them.  In Australia, the cost is approximately $100 for males, $150 for females.
