Marines are warriors. Comprised of smart, highly adaptable men and women, the Marine Corps serves as the aggressive tip of the U.S. military spear. Ours is a smaller, more dynamic force than any other in the American arsenal, and the only forward-deployed force designed for expeditionary operations by air, land, or sea. It is our size and expertise that allow us to move faster. Working to overcome disadvantage and turn conflict into victory, we accomplish great things, and we do so together. In the Marine Corps, there is a motto that describes our commitment to each other, our organization, and our country. It is Semper Fidelis or "Semper Fi." Translated from Latin, it means "Always Faithful."
The face of the Marine Corps has
evolved through the decades, but,
the
heart and soul remain the same. For
more than 227 years, the Marine Corps
has distinguished itself through honor,
courage and commitment while
protecting our nation's interests.
The primary changes in the Corps of
today as compared to yesterday are the
resources and technology the Corps now
has at its disposal. From
computer-designed uniforms to
unmanned aerial Vehicles, today's
Marine Corps is capable of meeting and overcoming any challenge it faces.
While innovations and new technology are critical for improving combat
service support methods, the Marines never underestimate the importance of
human beings. Each individual Marine serves a critical function and is trained
to know how to use and leverage technology. In future battlefields - as in
battles past - teamwork is paramount.
The United States Marines have defended and fought for the American people since before the Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence. Congress authorized two battalions of Marines on November 10, 1775 - the official birth of the Marine Corps. Since its inception, the Marine Corps has celebrated a legacy unlike any other. Its force is rich in history and traditions - upholding three core values that are at the soul of its institution: honor, courage and commitment.
