"Do you believe in religion?"
"No."
"Why?"
"Because I am in
the habit of believing the human race is the only species to believe in such a
thing, and also that Homo sapiens are extremely in the habit of being
ideological fools. Fear is our worst enemy, and maybe because we have presided
over the rest of the species on this planet, we must fear something.
If there is nothing to
fear, we must create fear. When there is fear we try to get rid of it, we
conjure up ideals, dreams, philosophies - call it what you will- to eradicate
this fear. Sometimes fear can be real, it can have reason to it. Fear of death
for example, can be the end of everything to us. What is a life if one day
everything you have learnt, experienced is just gone? Why not have an afterlife
- whether that be in hell, or heaven or in another body. It gives us something.
This is logic to me, this is the logic of nature. Overall I detest religion, it
is a weakness of the human race and I do not apologise for my beliefs - the
same as religious people do not apologise for their own. I abhor any practise
that would preach hate or punishment, especially. It is frightening to think so
many people allow themselves to be sucked into this void of human faults. Fear
is the cause of many things. One of which is hate."
"Are you afraid of death?"
"Someone, I
forget who, once said 'no man fears to be dead, but only the stroke of death'.
I'd have to argue with that, I think it's the other way around. Pain is not
lasting, people fear much more immaterial things than actual physical pain. The
thought of being dead, however, makes me feel afraid - maybe. I realise though,
there is no logic to this really. Once I am dead I will not miss the things
that make me not want to be dead...the things that make me want to be alive.
Death is an inevitability, but it does truly not have to be the crux of all
things. It is an inevitability that - as today is Saturday (technically) -
Monday will surely come. That does not mean we cannot enjoy the time we have
from here until then. Once we are dead we, of course, do not know whether we
will live on in memory. Other people do, however. They may hold us in their
heart, their books, their minds. I may not be religious but that does not mean
I am without faith. I have faith in nature and a belief that there is a magic
to it. That magic? We are always connected to everything around us, alive or
dead. The very atoms of our being were created at the beginning of this
universe and will keep on going. Is this a soul? Maybe there is something that
atoms can pass on as a sort of 'afterlife' - I do not have all the
answers."
