Surf Report - June 1, 2003

surfshot.com sez:

Comments (my comments in bold italics):

Very clean and glassy, waves breaking in front of the jetties and a little bit North of that.

Steep drops and workable walls peeling for both sides.

Hollow sections and it looks fun for all kinds of boards.

Waves size: Waist high

Sets size: Chest high

Sets Interval: 5-7 min.

Surfers Out: 15 guys

Wind: Calm

Weather: Cloudy skies

After all of that crap-ola above...I have just one point five things to add:

If PCH's west side has parked cars from Ave. Encinas to La Costa, there just might be more than 15 guys out -

Plus, if you can't find a parking place - don't worry - just keep on truckin' - you won't catch any waves, no how, no way!!

Today, June 1, looks okay?

It's Not!!

No place to park anyway - Go to Terra Mar - It's much better there than here!

What I say:

Return of yesterday - today - but smaller.

JJ's!!

South Swell - Negative Tide - Bombs!!

The Three Gangs of Locals were out - PLUS a Gang of One --- Henry!!

Actually, Henry admitted that he owed me a couple!

But - here's an admission from me:

Tim Hurley and Pat Connor's Gang (The TP Gang) of JJ's Locals is probably the nicest group of guys, with whom I have ever surfed!

Not only are they just a notch or so below the Evan Slater Pro Gang's skill level, they are a bunch of super good guys.

Of course, you gotta keep an eye on them at all times -

Just when I think I'm in the perfect spot for the next wave, Tim will paddle by me, towards the shoulder.

I'm thinking, yeah baby, Tim won't hack me, the next wave is MINE!!

I'm right in the pit.

- BUT -

Tim will cleverly distract me, and ask me a question about the "old days."

(he knows I love to spout-off about how good I used to surf)

Since I can barely sit on my board and talk - I'm finding it harder and harder to "multi-task" - another member of his gang does the old paddle-around!

NOW, I don't have priority any more, and there is at least one of the TP Gang sitting deeper than I am!

A set wave comes, I've been out-foxed, out maneuvered.

These guys are slick - but such nice guys that's it's hard to do anything but admire their surfing and psychological skills!

Later,

BA

Oops Forgot Some Stuff:

Thought I'd better add some disclaimers:

* All of the tales I'm spinning are based upon facts of some sort.
* Most of the tales will be at least 50% factual.

I'm doing this web thing for a few reasons, and it is, and will be, "a work in progress" for a while:

1. It's an easy way for me to organize my "autobiography" so my kids will know a bit more about me.
2. I find this computer and internet stuff fascinating.
3. I was lucky to be able to start surfing - at least in my opinion - in the "Golden Age" of surfing - I do have some yarns to spin regarding those times.
4. This is an efficient way for some of the old guys to touch bases again - I've received a few e-mails from old (err, long-time) friends I've haven't seen in forty years or so - I think that's way cool.
5. I'm still surfing almost every day - and, at least in my opinion - that's a pretty "boss" thing to write about.
6. I think it will be nice, in a couple of years, to maybe look back at how good - or bad - the surf was in any given stretch of time.
