Surf Report - August 1, 2003 -



WindanSea again - WHEW!!

I rented a car this morning from Enterprise in O-Side - good people and they offer a great 3 day weekend rental - about $30.00, including tax for a Friday morning - Monday morning rental.

My bank is across the street from Enterprise, so I walked over there to see if the DA and IRS had left me any $$ for the weekend.

I still had enough $ to buy gas and maybe a beer this afternoon - but - while I was waiting in the ATM line - I talked to a couple of surfy-looking guys.

I said: "Howzit bros - how's the surf?"

One guy, about my age, sez: "Tide's too low, the waves suck."

Other guy, about 40 years younger than I, sez: "Dude, it's bigger than yesterday, P***o will be on fire!"

Proof positive - where one surfs, and how well one surfs, just might predict the quality of a surf report.

Anyway - finally got the car and raced - as fast as one can go at 8:00 am on a Friday on the Coast Highway - south.

Slowed down as I passed P***o (JJ's), and it was schmokin'!

Tide was starting to get a bit full, but the waves were still good, and perhaps a tad crowded - at least 75 guys out between Cram and Silver's and the Jetty.

I made it to Wind**Sea about 9:00 or so, made the obligatory cruise - the wrong way - thru the parking lot, and parked behind Cordon at Neptune's Corner.

Doc Dowdy gave me a new Fuji Disposable, in return for a photo I took of him - I'm stoked - I'm a Professional Photo-Guy!

Waves were good, but pretty crowded - luckily the bulk of the surfers were locals -

Sat and sat - only 4 waves per set, 20 minute intervals - got tangled in a kelp paddy - so I took off the leash -

Finally, caught one good wave - got hacked by Timmy Bessell.

So what - good wave - and I got a nice photo of Tim's butt.

Tomorrow - 5:00 AM - I'm there - wherever that may be!

Oops Forgot Some Stuff:


Thought I'd better add some disclaimers:

* All of the tales I'm spinning are based upon facts of some sort.
* Most of the tales will be at least 50% factual.


I'm doing this web thing for a few reasons, and it is, and will be, "a work in progress" for a while:

1. It's an easy way for me to organize my "autobiography" so my kids will know a bit more about me.
2. I find this computer and internet stuff fascinating.
3. I was lucky to be able to start surfing - at least in my opinion - in the "Golden Age" of surfing - I do have some yarns to spin regarding those times.
4. This is an efficient way for some of the old guys to touch bases again - I've received a few e-mails from old (err, long-time) friends I've haven't seen in forty years or so - I think that's way cool.
5. I'm still surfing almost every day - and, at least in my opinion - that's a pretty "boss" thing to write about.
6. I think it will be nice, in a couple of years, to maybe look back at how good - or bad - the surf was in any given stretch of time.
