Someone I know well is my triathlon coach, Bryant Howard. He is about
5'10'', really buff, and hairy. He is extremely encouraging, but tells
you criticism when you need it. He jokes a lot, usually funny, but not
always that nice to the person he is joking about. He knows everything
about swimming, cycling, and running. He not only cares about his athletes
in an athletic standpoint, but also as a friend. One, if not the first,
things he asks his athletes when they see him is "How is your life going?"
He believes in balance, as can be rare among coaches. His perfect athlete
would have a good balance in life, including many interests besides sports.
He wants to develop a lifestyle as well as an athlete.
He is from a rough background and has become successful. As a coach, he
has sent one athlete to the Olympic training center and has had four turn professional.
These I believe, are his greatest accomplishments as a coach.
Bryant would describe me first in a funny way. He would say I was oblivious
and smelly. Then he would tell you I am a dedicated athlete and I work
hard. He would tell you, as he does with everyone else, one of my greatest
achievements, that I am the NW Junior Female Triathlon Champion. He would
explain how I am injured a lot. He might even go into that it's my fault
I'm injured because I don't always listen to my body. Lastly, he would
talk about the bond we have and how I'm almost like a daughter to him.
