Surely Renee Fleming's soprano must be one of the most beautiful voices before the public today. Though renowned for her interpretations of Mozart, Strauss, and Verdi, as well as for her commitment to contemporary music, she says that the bel canto repertoire has always been central to her career.

And the winner is...* Vaughan Williams: A Sea Symphony
Robert Spano, conducting Atlanta Symphony.
The first contemporary recording of an American conductor performing a
Vaughan Williams symphony promises to become one of Telarc's most
legendary discs for performance and sound. Robert Spano, who recently
completed his inaugural season as Music Director of the Atlanta
Symphony
Orchestra, won widespread acclaim for his first Telarc recording with
the
ASO, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade and Russian Easter Overture
(CD-80568), termed by one critic "the best rendition of [Scheherazade]
to
come around in years…I can’t imagine a more distinguished or appealing
first release." Here he leads the ASO and Chorus in a breathtaking
performance of the monumental Sea Symphony by Vaughan Williams, with
gifted soloists Christine Goerke, soprano, and Brett Polegato,
baritone.
Read what the press is saying about A Sea Symphony:
"...Telarc has given us a Sea Symphony for the new century, as fine a
performance as we could ask for with the best choral singing ever.
Make
sure you’re wearing a life jacket when you play this one!"

Dixie Chicks

The Dixie Chicks aren't old enough to remember when radio
programmed pop records next to country, rock, folk, and beyond, but
their Texas DNA tells them that's the way music was meant to be
heard. On "Home," which they coproduced in Austin with Lloyd Maines,
the father of lead singer Natalie Maines, they strip off the
star-making gloss of Nashville.

It is not just the timbre of Norah Jones's voice that is mature
beyond her 22 years. Her assured phrasing and precise time are more
often found in older singers as well. She is instantly recognizable,
blending intimations of Billie Holiday and Nina Simone.

Eminem

Any lingering doubts as to the depth of Eminem's skills or his
potential for raw yet compelling honesty are dispelled on "The
Eminem Show"'s first track. Armed with a quicksilver flow and a
thundering rhythm track (the record was exec produced by longtime
mentor and partner Dr. Dre), "White America" finds Eminem
ferociously mauling the hand that feeds him.

Coldplay required a lifetime to make their wonderfully assured
debut, "Parachutes." But it took less than two years for the moody
British quartet to deliver a masterful follow-up. As a band Coldplay
have advanced to a stage where they outshine nearly every one of
their rivals.

Rod Stewart
Our price: $13.49 | You save: $5.49

Rod Stewart's mellowing years have neatly coincided with a
commitment to smart ballad choices and a generally warmer musical
persona. Rod the Mod liberated at last? Like many a pop singer,
Stewart returns here to what's become generally known as the Great
American Songbook.

Tony Bennett with k.d. lang

Never mind the project's odd couple, "He's got a girlfriend; so does she" marketing shuck. This is a musical love affair in all its splendor. Produced by the seemingly chameleonic producer T Bone Burnett (who previously revived traditional bluegrass with spectacular success on "O Brother, Where Art Thou?"), the septuagenarian legend and his unlikely contemporary foil affectionately court a dozen songs from the Louis Armstrong repertoire.

"Burnin' Down the House: Live at the House of Blues"
Etta James
Our price: $13.99 | You save: $4.99

Just when it seems that the purr has left Etta James's estimable
voice, about halfway through this live concert recorded in 2001 at
L.A.'s House of Blues she begins her eternally romantic ballad "At
Last," and the years tumble away. James's singing becomes flexible
as a tenor saxophone, building to a lovely, serpentine
diminuendo.

* Delbert McClinton, "Room to Breathe"

Faith Hill finally owns up to what we knew all along. She may be
from deep-dish Mississippi, but she isn't a country singer, and

it."
