In the late 12-th century Messrs. von Hallwyl in the brook Aabach, 700 meters let to the north of the Hallwilersees establish a residential tower which was surrounded on three sides by a dry ditch. Around 1265 a palace with stock rooms was established to the east of the residential tower directly on the brook shore in the first floor and living rooms in the first and second upper floor.

Hans Theodor von Hallwyl (1835-1909) let between 1871 till 1873 reshape some buildings in the style of the new Gothic. The founder's crisis did the builder-owner, however, in 1874 in the bankruptcy. His brother Walther (1839-1921) bought the castle from him, so that there remained furthermore in family estate. Because he lived, nevertheless, in Stockholm, the castle for three decades remained unused. A comprehensive Instandstellung ordered in 1910 Walther's wife Wilhelmina von Hallwyl (1844-1930). During the following six years archeologist Nils mountain Lith carried out extensive investigations, while architect Anders Roland restored the castle into the medieval state and cancelled, besides, the neo-Gothic rebuildings.

After the death of her husband Wilhelmina von Hallwyl brought to life in 1925 the Hallwil endowment and made the castle of the general public accessible. In 1994 the castle as a donation to the canton passed over the eagle's region which carried out an urgently necessary whole renovation between 1997 and 2004.
