In the 13-th century the Habsburgs on the cliff flank slightly to be defended allowed to establish a castle to protect the south side of her heartland, the home office. The Habsburgs awarded the castle fiefdom to the inns of Brunegg. As a more only in particular known owner Wernher is called by Brunegg, which he died 1270. Other owners were the knights of Hedingen, Messrs. von Trostburg and the Gessler of mountain Meien.

In 1415 the town of Bern conquered the western part of the eagle's region; Brunegg was one of few castles which opposition performed. Bern drew 1470 the fiefdom and lent it 1472/73 to the family to scythe maker from Mellingen AG. When 1528 were introduced in the Bern eagle's region the Reformation, the scythe makers remaining Catholic sold the castle again to Bern. 1626 and 1664 it was strongly damaged by forces of nature.
