Le Château d'Auenstein

Auenstein

Schloss Auenstein

The castle was built in the 13-th century presumably by order of Messrs. von Gowenstein and 1307 was mentioned for the first time as a possession of Messrs. von Rinach in a document. In fights between Habsburgs and confederates in 1389 erstürmten the Bernese the castle and burned down them. The arrangement was not rebuilt and remained till the modern times ruins.

Because also the rule about the village meadow stone was connected with the ruins, the uninhabitable building changed several times the owner. Albrecht von Rinach sold the ruins 1465 to Heinrich Hasfurter from Lucerne. The ruins passed over 1487 in the possession of Hans Rudolf von Luternau who resold them, nevertheless, already four years later to the family of Mülinen from Brugg which already owned the nearby castle Kasteln. General Johann Ludwig von Erlach bought the ruins 1648 which were disposed in 1732 by his descendants to the town of Bern.
