Timeline of the 1960's

1960
The 1st debate for being the president was on T.V. Was among Senator John F. Kennedy and Richard M. Nixon. NASA sent up the ECHO, the first satellite of communications. Wilma Rudolf gained three gold medals in the Olympic games heald in Rome.

1961
Kennedy goes to the White House, gave his famous speech. The Soviet has sent the first man in the space. May 5, 1961, Alan Shepard was sent to space in the "Freedom 7".

1962
John Glenn was the first man to go around the earth 3 times within 5 hours. Rachel Carson was a scientist and a writer who notified that our land would die of the contamination and chemical substances.

1963
Martin Luther King Jr. made his speech, "I have a Dream" on August 28. The demonstrators of more than 200,000 people went to Washington DC to demand the same rights for Black and white people. President Kennedy was killed in Dallas, Texas on November 22.

1964
The Beatles, a British rock and roll band, came to be a huge hit. This was the first year that boxes of cigarettes had a warning on it. The first Civil Rights bill was passed to stop the racial discrimination.

1965
The president Johnson ordered the attacks that open fire on Vietnam. People in America begin to protest the war. The first world roofed stadium was built, the Houston Astrodome.

1966
Walt Disney and a Pioneer of animated movies, died of the cancer in December 15, 1966.

1967
The first transplant of the heart was carried out by Dr. Christiaan Barnard.

1968
Martin Luther King was murdered in Memphis, Tennessee. The brother of Kennedy was murdered, also. In November 5, 1968, Shirley Chisholm was picked first African-American to congress.

1969
Festival of Woodstock, lasted 3 days. July 20, 1969, 4:18 p.m. Apollo 11 went to the moon with astronauts on board the ship.
