The BBC and Vanguard

are reporting that Nigerians have taken over three oil plants from
Shell and ChevronTexaco. According to the Vanguard, acts such as this
are not new to the region. Closures, kidnaps, seizures and threat
of violence have become a recurring decimal in the Niger Delta area
mostly over claims of neglect by the authorities and environmental
degradation by the oil and gas exploration and production companies
operating in the region.

The Nigerians have taken the workers at the factories hostage, according to Shell. The BBC says Last
month, over 80 protesters occupied a rig operated by Shell contractors
in neighbouring Delta state and 17 people were injured when soldiers
opened fire. Journalists were later shown the graves of seven men who
were reportedly shot dead in the incident, but the army denied that
anyone was killed.

Jesus Stick
Mood:  a-ok
Topic: Finding Religion
Why is taking something said to be holy by Christians, adding the word Jesus to it, and reducing the item to the simplest noun funny? Just say
Jesus Fish Stick
and not laugh. Ok, bad example. But Jesus Cracker instead of Communinon wafer?

SCUBA in Lake Washington

Topic: Seattle Region

The Seattle Times
has an article about the aircraft
on the bottom of Lake Washington. I've been interested about this since I moved to the region a few years ago. Maybe next summer I should try diving in the lake?

Wikinews

Topic: Rumors on the internets
Wired has an article about a new site from Jimmy Wales, co-founder of the Wikipedia project. The site is called Wikinews, and as the name suggests, is a wiki made up of current news articles. ”Alex Halavais(Informatics Director at the Univeristy of buffalo)believes Wikinews' collaborative editing process will help foster a neutral tone in the content of its stories. However, he thinks writers' biases will affect the selection of articles contributed, in much the same way that profit motives impact what mainstream media outlets cover.”

"Athen's great experiment ended in less than two centuries, when, in 338 BC, Philip of Macedon's forces invaded the city inflicting on its inhabitants the eternal fate of the noble and enlightened: to be brutally crushed by the armed and dumb."

Nooo!!!
If by a "Liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people -- their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties -- someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "Liberal," then I'm proud to say I'm a "Liberal."

"A pre-emptive war in 'defense' of freedom would surely destroy freedom, because one simply cannot engage in barbarous action without becoming a barbarian, because one cannot defend human values by calculated and unprovoked violence without doing mortal damage to the values one is trying to defend." ~ J. William Fulbright
