Italeri OH-13S 1/72 scale

Completed Winter 2002-2003

Notes:

This kit is basically straight from the box. The kit was constructed and painted in four major sub-assemblies.

First is the tail boom, the second is the cockpit and body, with the others being the engine and rotors. The boom parts are too thick, but since they need to be scraped to remove very distinct seams, they will size down some and be more acceptable.

Fit is good for the majority of parts. The only major problem problem fitwise comes where the engine is located in the tail boom. Here the fit is very tight, and it will take some patience to get the engine placed inside the boom without causing damage to either the engine or boom and also allow the cabin/body to attach properly to the boom. Another problem area is the drive shaft to the tail rotor that runs across the top of the boom. Some of the parts that make up this will need to be trimmed for length to get a proper fit. I placed some weight under the floor pan and behind the seats to ensure that the 'copter will not tail sit.

The rotor blades have some droop molded into them, which is unfortunate since the blades have been molded to turn in the wrong direction. You will need to reverse the droop and mount the blades the other way.

The bubble canopy is excellent, cleanly molded and crystal clear.

The seatbelts are decals from the spares box.

The kit decals are in register and dense. The only point against them is that the star-and-bar marking for underneath the body is too big. They are easy to apply and sit down well after a few coats of Microsol. I could not find any pictures of Vietnam era OH-13S machines with the yellow warning line across the front of the bubble (as shown on the box top artwork), so it is probably best left off, as I have done.
