Personality: The nerdiest bookworm you ever met, Ver'aye loves knowledge for the sake of knowing, and it's rare for him to go anywhere without a book in hand. For all that he seems like a classic introvert, though, he is charming and funny when he tries to be, and he gets along quite well with most people, excelling at making the connections Yandouth lacks. He's very polite and shares what he has with those around him.
History: Verkelaye's parents weren't married when he was born, but they had every intention of being married shortly after his birth. However, the marriage never took place as his father died suddenly in a mining accident. His mother never quite recovered from the shock, and she never thought about marrying anyone else. So, Verkelaye grew up alone with his mother.
Verkelaye's mother saw very quickly that her son was rather clever, so she made sure that he attended lessons with the local harper. He proved to be a good student and soon learned how to read. His appetite for books became insatiable. He read everything he could get his hands on from books about mining to his mother's recipes. Everything was interesting to him, and he wanted to know about everything, especially about dragons.
As soon as Verkelaye had seen his first dragon come to the hold on Search when he had thirteen turns, he'd been interested in them. He quickly found all the reading material he could get his hands on that had anything to do with dragons or even firelizards. Thinking he might be able to learn more about dragons by studying their smaller counterparts, he went hunting for a firelizard clutch and was lucky enough to Impress Lymet and Toress.
Seeing how much her son loved reading, Verkelaye's mother strongly encouraged him to go to the Harper Hall where he would be able to have access to many books and records to study. Although he felt a bit guilty for leaving his mother behind, Verkelaye finally agreed and left for the hall when he had fourteen turns. What he didn't know at the time was that his mother was very ill, and didn't want him to see her waste away. Half a turn after his arrival at the Harper Hall, his mother passed away.
Verkelaye was extremely upset when he heard the news of his mother's death. He even thought about leaving the Harper Hall, but where could he go? He'd never met any of his mother's family since they'd shunned her for having an illegitimate child. So, he stayed at the hall and focused on his studies though he knew doing so wouldn't change anything.
Verkelaye's world was turned upside down once more when dragonriders came to the hall, and he was Searched. Unfamiliar with the bustling nature of a weyr and still grieving for his mother, Verkelaye spent a lot of his time reading or wandering the nearby beaches. It was then, while waiting for the clutch to hatch, the Verkelaye came across a firelizard's clutch and Impress his next two friends, Nyetis and Isson.
With four flits to look after and soon a new hatchling dragon, Verkelaye soon got over his sadness in the work of the day. He also adjusted to the weyr and opened up to the people around him. Although he still preferred reading to company, he could be lively and witty when he wanted to be.
Since Impressing Yandouth, Verkelaye has Impressed his fifth firelizard, Tass, and has learned that connections with people are rather important, especially when your dragon is a power-loving introvert. He often has to patch things up with other riders when Yandouth gets out of hand, so it comes in handy.
