1 1/2 t. vinegar
1 1/2 t. baking soda
3/4 c. shortening
2 1/4 c. sugar
3 eggs
1 1/2 t. salt
1 1/2 cocoa
1 1/2 vanilla
1 bottle red food coloring
3 c. sifted plain flour
1 1/2 c. buttermilk
Mix vinegar and baking soda and set aside. Beat shortening, sugar, eggs, cocoa, and vanilla, and salt until fluffy. Add food coloring. Alternately beat in flour and buttermilk. Fold in vinegar and baking soda mixture. Pour into three greased round pans. Bake 20-25 minutes or until done at 350 degrees.
Frosting:
1 1/2 c. milk
1/2 c. flour
1 1/2 c. sugar
3 sticks of butter
1 T. vanilla
Stir milk and flour in a saucepan on medium heat until thick. Cool COMPLETELY. Beat sugar and butter until fluffy. Then add milk and flour mixture, a teaspoon at a time. Beat at a high speed. Frost and keep the cake in the refrigerator.
