Bibleman

In memory of Wade Black Norton

January 30, 1976-April 4, 1994

by Kimberly Patterson

"Have you heard the news?" a deacon asked me at church
One warm, sunny Sunday morning almost five years ago.
"Have you heard the news? They say the Norton boy is braindead."
I cross my fingers...say a prayer..."No...not Wade."
I just saw him at school last week and he gave me his senior picture.
In seventh grade we wrote notes in Science to pass the time.
In tenth grade our lockers were next to each other and
We had Bible class together. Everytime his pictionary team scored,
He'd hum the Michigan Fight Song and clap along.
That was the year he wrote in my yearbook
"Thanks for always giving me paper in Geometry."
At church he had earned the name "Bibleman" because
He could answer almost any question in Sunday School.
That was also the year I had a crush on him just like the rest of the girls.
The next morning at school we learned the details of the accident--
How he was asleep when it happened and that he probably felt no pain.
We hoped and prayed for any sign of life, but he was already gone.
So we gathered round -- hundreds of us -- to pay our respects...
Tell stories, laugh, cry, comfort, say goodbye...
But not me.
To my friend who fell asleep to wake up with the angels,
I say, "See you later, Bibleman."
