The
New Millenium Youth Council was founded about a year ago by the Community
Partnership for Youth. At a teen think tank held in Huntsville teens
were surveyed on a variety of issues facing them. The number one concern
of the teenagers was that they wanted a safe place to hangout. Thus, the
New Millenium Youth Council was formed and Neverland, a safe hangout for
teenagers, was born. Right now Neverland is relying mainly on private
sponsorship and the proceeds from fundraiser events like the Battle of
the Bands, but in the future we hope to to find a permanant place to have
Neverland. Teens will be able to go there after school to get help with
homework or just hangout, and events will go on during the weekend. Lack
of funding has been our major set back. In addition to organizing Neverland,
NMYC members meet with the mayor, attend school board meetings, chamber
of commerce meetings, as well as city council meetings, to give teens a
voice in the community.

Purpose: To establish a
teen center, safe of drugs,
alcohol, and violence. It
will begin to address many of
the major concerns for teens today.
Teenagers will be
offered workshops on pressing
subjects such as conflict
management, personal relationships,
finances, and
career counseling. This
center will be named
Neverland, after the Peter Pan
concept of never growing
old and following your heart.
Neverland will not only
provide aid for teens during the
weekdays, but a safe
place of entertainment during
the weekends.
