Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Founders

History of Delta Sigma Theta

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded by twenty-two young women on January 13, 1913 who attended Howard University, in Washington, D.C. The sisterhood was based on Christian principles and dedicated to public service. The sorority promotes academic achievement, cultural enrichment, public service, and good moral character.

Delta Sigma Theta has been involved in many of America's greatest changes such as: the first traveling bookmobile, the first association to support the Association of Cancer Control, now the American Cancer Society, launched a nationwide voters registration drive, had a massive letter writing campaign in support of the Civil Rights Bill, just to name a few.

The sorority has well over 250,000 members in 850 active chapters including Alaska, Hawaii, Germany, England, Panama, Republic of Korea, Bermuda, Japan, Bahamas, and the Virgin Island. Even after 90 years of service, Delta Sigma Theta continues to promote its founding principles.
