I got my amateur license in January 1999,
with the operator privileges of a Technician. that’s where most new hams start at.
I was side tracked for a while after that being I got my first computer at the same time. But there’s just nothing like Radio where you can have your radio waves bending and bouncing off the upper regions of the atmosphere, and talking to other parts of the world. Possibly even faster then computers.. Especially if you have a connection as bad as mine.. lol...
I plan to upgrade to general class soon so I can do some of this bending and bouncing stuff. We also communicate with each other through computers,(not internet) Morse code, satellites, and even amateur television. ((have ya ever wanted to be on tv. Here’s your ticket lol.))

So what is ham radio?

Well I hear that question a lot, and I’m kind of surprised that Name just don’t set off bells. Some may compare it to CB radio. But I best read it in one of my books I read saying something to the affect of ...
CB radio is a volt wagon and Ham radio is a Cadillac.
We mainly use it as a hobbies to talk to good friends and meet new ones,
but there much more.
During emergencies, We help public service during Hurricanes, Tornadoes, Floods, Search and rescues, you name it. Watch your local news channel during a severe weather event and your likely to here the name "amateur radio or ham radio" mentioned more then once.

Update

As of September 14, 2002 I have upgraded to General....
