X-COM: UFO Defense Review
High Points Research alien technology and manufacture it for yourself Low Points Too easy to beat for Hard-Core Strategy gamers Story It has just turned 1999 and leaders from around the world are constantly having complaints abou alien abductions. Then, strange things happen. Thousands of calls a day reporting spotting UFOs an aliens have been received and the world has no choice but to fight the Alien threat. You are the leader of a international world protection Unit called "X-COM".Review Microprose isn't known to make the best games, and many gamers might think this game is another one of the companys failures. This is not true. The first time anyone plays this game, the game will seem terrible. The fact is, that if you play this game a lot and get the hang of it and figure out how to play, this will be one of the most addictive games ever. You are the leader of "X-COM", the world protection army who must seek out and destroy the alien threat. The first thing you must do is pick a place on Earth where you want your Headquarters to be. Put in the middle of a large area of land because then, it will be easier to defend from the alien threat. As the game progresses, you will have the need to build several more Bases all around the world. In the beginning of the game, you start out with around a little over 4.2 million dollars. You start out with an arsenal of crap. Pistols and rifles may sound great but to tell the truth, they suck...big time. At first, you will only have 3 things to research with your scientists: Laser weapons, Medical Kit, and a Motion scanner. But early in the game, at your first battle with the alien menace, you will be reseaching much more. When you are done researching whatever you are researching, you can manufacture it to help your soldiers out. You can also research buildings that you can build inside of your base. Aliens will do many things to piss you off. They will... A)Just fly around in their Flying Saucers. This really gets me mad in the beginning of the game, simply because of the fact that their Saucers are faster than your "Interceptors". In this occasion, send both of your Interceptors to seek out and destroy the UFO. Only attempt to destroy it if it is Very small, Small, or Medium. You wont stand a chance against anything bigger. B) Land somewhere. In this case, Send out your equipped "Skyranger" ship and an Interceptor incase it decides to leave before your Skyranger gets to it. NOTE: The Interceptor is much faster than the Skyranger. C)Attack a populated area. Prepare to fight hard! These battles are tough simply because in addition to destroying the aliens, you must protect the citizens from the aliens. D)Attack your base. You're screwed if its your Headquarters. This is one of the reasons that you must leave at least 5 soldiers to each base. To protect yourself before they even land, make sure you have a couple defenses set up in your base such as Missle Defenses or Laser Defenses. E)Build a Base. DESTROY AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! Not extremely tough. Just watch where your going because there are about 15 aliens in each completedbase. At the end of each month, you will receive a progress report. Each major country gives you money. You get more money from them if you are doing good defending their country. You lose money if you do a crappy job and let the aliens do what they want. Sometimes, if you do bad enough, a country will drop out and associate themselves with aliens. You dont want this because then, bases will pop up everywhere. You will also get a short report of how you did. Your goal in this game is to find the alien threat and destroy it. Overall, this is a great strategy game. Great work Microprose!
