The Life of Ruth Whitehursticongrvine


This testimony to Mrs. Nance was written around 1999.

Ruth moved to Union Springs, Alabama in 1950 and has been a resident for 52 years. She attended Coffee County public schools. She retired after 32 years as an agent for Atlanta Life Insurance Company.

She has been a member of Wayman's Chapel A.M.E. Church for 51 years and has served in various capacities of the church including President, Gospel Choir; member of the Board of Stewards; Church Treasurer, and chaired numerous fundraising events including Women's Day and Rainbow Tea.

She formerly supported and participated in numerous social and public service activities in the Bullock County area. She is fondly remembered as an avid supporter of the Little League Baseball teams during the 60's and 70's when she sponsored concessions for the team. Food from her kitchen is always a special treat enjoyed at church and community activities.

A proud and gracious woman who has been a role model for the women of the community. She is respected for her generosity and devotion to her family and church.

Ruth Irene Whitehurst Nance passed away Oct., 29, 2009 in Daytona Beach where she resided the past six years. She was born July 29, 1919 to Marion and Emma Barnes Whitehurst in Enterprise, Ala. She was the youngest of 12 children to survive infancy. She and Y.C. Nance were wed Aug. 25, 1941 and were married for 25 years. Three children, Mary Sue Nance Hawkins, Orlando Tyrone Nance and Roscoe Nance were born to this union. She and her family moved to Union Springs, Ala., in 1950. She was an agent for Atlanta Life Insurance Co. while raising her three children. She retired in 1984 after 32 years with the company. In addition to being a full-time employee and mother, she also worked at her husband's side as he organized and coached youth baseball teams in Union Springs. She was a member of Wayman Chapel AME Church where she served in many capacities. After relocating to Daytona Beach, she associated with Mount Zion AME Church. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Sue Nance Hawkins (Bill), Daytona Beach; and a son, Roscoe Nance (Willye Mae), Herndon, Va.; grandchildren: Karen Alisa Rosen, Encino, Calif.; Valerie Nance, San Francisco; Ronald Keith Evans (Monica), Herndon, Va.; Donna Hawkins, Hampton, Va; Stephen Nance (Zaychina), Tallahassee, Fla., Rahkia Nance, Birmingham, Ala., and Riva Nance, Herndon, Va. Her husband, Y.C. Nance; son, Orlando Tyrone Nance; and grandson, Demetrius Nance, preceded her in death. She also leaves to mourn her passing 10 great-grandchildren, two brothers-in-law, two sisters-in-law, numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral service will be held Thursday, Nov. 5 at 11 a.m. CT at Wayman Chapel AME Church, Union Springs, Ala., under the direction of Carter's Funeral Home. Local arrangements are under the care and trust of Volusia Memorial Funeral Home, Ormond Beach, FL. Mrs. Nance will be interred at John's Chapel AME Church Cemetery in Enterprise, Coffee County, Alabama.
