BRIEF HISTORY
Madison County High School was built in Gurley, Alabama in 1908. It was the first state sponsored public school in the state of Alabama. It replaced the old city-sponsored Gurley Public School. In the late 1920s, the school burned to the ground during the great factory fire that destroyed most of the city. The school was rebuilt on the same lot in 1933 by the CCC as a part of FDR's New Deal program. The school remained in Gurley and was added to throughout the rest of the 20th Century. In 1999, Madison County High School was moved to a new building outside of Gurley on Brock Road adjacent to Highway 72 East. Enrollment in grades nine through twelve is currently 532. The principal is J. Ricky Sizemore
