WHAT IS THERAPEUTIC RIDING?

THERAPEUTIC RIDING uses equine-orientated activities for the purpose of contributing positively to the cognitive, physical, emotional and social well being of people with disabilities. Therapeutic riding provides benefits in the area of therapy, education, sport, recreation and leisure.

According to the experts in the field of horseback riding, therapeutic riding is not only a recreational and sporting activity, but it is a very valuable therapeutic tool. The horse produces 1,000 movements in three dimensions in ten minutes. This is a far greater amount of movement than any therapist or exercise equiptment can produce in the same amount of time.

Most riders have limited movement therefore; the movement of the horse is particularly valuable to the rider. The muscles used when riding a horse are identicle to the muscle and joint movement used in walking. Two legs are notoriously unstable, the horse provides a mobile four legged platform on which the rider can balance.

Therapeutic riding gives a great opportunity to develop self awareness and independance. All recreation is therapeutic, but for some these opportunities are very limited and riding is an option which combines recreation with enjoyable therapy.

Therapeutic riding services provide wonderful and unique opportunities for disabled individuals to improve their physical well-being while providing recreational and social outlets. These services are springing up all over the United States and have proven to provide a myriad of benefits to the disabled. Posture, balance, strength, flexability, and hand-eye coordination are just a few of the physical benefits. Self confidence, self esteem, self awareness, self discipline, self sufficiency, concentration, and independance also improve the spiritual well-being of riders.
