Life's Lessons

If people grew and people changed,
ascending through the years
beyond the scars of former times
above their foolish fears
If lessons learned in bitterness
could help us on our way
We'd leave the past with knowledge
learned, embracing better days
And you and I would leave behind
our old restrictive chains
But here we are, defenses high,
And here we will remain

Between us stands the ghostly things
From years before we met
Attention getting unrelenting
feelings of regret
With you on your side, me on mine,
and spirits in between
We see our futures through our pasts
and both become unclean
We curse the past but pull it back
to use it as a guide
And question then, when once again,
relationships have died

We cast away like viruses
affections meant for us
And turn aside with hardened eyes
accepting emptiness
I watch you leave and clench my teeth
I know the words to say
But let him go, I think again
You're better off this way
Another ghost is added then
Within my heart and mind
You'll haunt me now as others do
Until the day I die
