This line begins with Robert Lancaster. He was born 1720 in Lancashire, England, and died 1785 in Orange County, VA. He married abt. 1740 to Mary unknown (b. abt 1720 in England). Their only known child was Richard.
Richard Lancaster was born in 1745 in VA, and died Sept. 27, 1815 in Orange County, VA. He married Joannah Singleton (born 1748 in Orange Co., VA, and died Feb. 24, 1823 in VA). Joannah was the daughter of Daniel Singleton, who was born about 1712 either in England or Virginia, and his wife Susannah Mason, who was born abt. 1722 in England. Joannah was one of their 7 children.
Richard Lancaster fought in the Revolutionary War, and then after marrying Joannah, had 10 children: (1) Benjamin (see more below about him).
(2) Elizabeth, who married George Washington Hutchinson, a brother to Nancy Ann Hutchinson, who married Elizabeth's brother Benjamin. Elizabeth & George had 6 children: (a) Joanna, who married James Neal, (b) Sarah Ann, who married Robert Mason, (c) Susan A., who married Francis H. McKnight, (d) Elizabeth F., who married Calvin F. Summerlin, (e) Martha Ann, who married William J. Haguewood, and (f) Hulda, who married first to Corday Bains, and then to James Allen(?).
(3) Larkin, who married Nancy Stephens, (4) Thomas B., who married Mary Wharton, (5) Jonathan, who married Sarah Herndon. Two of their sons came from VA to Sumter Co., AL, with their Uncle Benjamin and his sister Elizabeth; (6) John, (7) Richard, who married Hulda Wharton, (8) Bartlett, who married Mary M. Hughes, (9) Mason S., who married Nancy Southerland, and (10) James G., who married Elizabeth Herndon.
Benjamin Lancaster (oldest child of Richard & Joannah Singleton Lancaster) was born 7-23-1778 in VA, and died 2-14-1866 in Sumter Co., AL. He married Nancy Ann Hutcherson. Benjamin and his younger sister Elizabeth, who married Nancy Ann's brother George Washington Hutcherson, came to Sumter County from Virginia. Thier other siblings either stayed in VA or went to Kentucky. Two of Benjamin's brother Jonathan's sons also came to Sumter County with them. Benjamin and Nancy Ann Hutcherson Lancaster had 8 children: (1) Joanna, who married William Gambreal; (2) Sarah Ann, who married Obediah Gregory; (3) Lewis; (4) Albert, who married Elizabeth Peace Jenkins; (5) Martha, who married Leroy Jenkins; (6) Mary Ann, who married Ingram B. Kennard; (7) Louvenia, who was born 9-16-1820 in VA, and died 9-28-1895 in Sumter Co., AL, and married James O. Leard (see my Leard link); and (8) Agness Elizabeth, who married Meredith Webb Lynn.
Below is a census of the graves in Mt. Herman Cemetery in York, Sumter County, AL, taken May 2, 2007. This cemetery is located about 6 miles north of York on the right side of Millville Road (also known as the Country Club Road and as County Road # 19. It is just before the large blue Sumter County water tower that's very obvious in the curve up ahead on the hill. There is no sign marking the cemetery. However, it sits adjacent to what is marked as the Smith's Chapel Cemetery, which contains black graves. The Smith's Chapel Cemetery erected a sign that says it is closed to future burials as of May 1, 2006. This sign was not there before then. Immediately past this Smith's Chapel sign is a dirt trail on the same side of the road. There is a locked gate there, but it can be accessed. Follow the trail up the hill into the woods to the cemetery. This old Mt Herman Cemetery is separated from the Smith's Chapel side by only a very small metal fence row and lots of trees and bushes. In fact, from the Smith's Chapel side, you might not even see the Mt Herman side.
It is difficult to arrange this layout by row, as many of the graves are staggered. However, beginning at the far back right corner, the graves are read left to right and numbered as closely in that order as possible. The cemetery faces the woods behind the cemetery. It must be noted that throughout the cemetery, there are multiple "stones" which presumably mark locations for either lost or future graves. Indications are made below for the beginning of a "row" as best as it can be labeled.

As of the first census in Jud Arrington's book, Public Cemeteries of Sumter County, Alabama 1834-1972, there were only 65 graves in this cemetery. Nearly 20 more people were buried here over the next 35 years.
NOTE: There are 2 graves in the black cemetery next to this one that have Leards in them. Because of the Leard connections above, I've included them here, too:
It can be assumed that these were slaves of some of the Leard family.
