Drury / Drewry

Meaning: (British) "love affair", "love token" (from the old French).

The Drurys became one of the most prominent families of medieval England. There were at least 18 knights, five of whom were Sheriffs of Norfolk and Suffolk, and four Knights of the Shire. Members of the Drury family became advisors to the Kings of England and were among the richest citizens of all the kingdoms.
The Drewry line is one of the longest lines in this family. My great uncle Guy Powell (see my Powell link) and a distant cousin of his did most of the work on this line back in the 1960's. Uncle Guy was kind enough to pass along all of his information when I started working on our family history, and I have picked up with his generation and gone down from there. You will notice that the spelling of the name changed several times through the years, starting with Drieu in the year 1045; changing to Drui by around 1200; then back to Drieu in the later 1200's; then to Drury around the year 1300; and finally to Drewry by 1679. Besides the origins of this family in England, you will also see connections by marriage to the countries of Brazil and Spain. This is the story of the Drewry family.
This line has been traced back to our ancestor who was called The Norman Drieu, born in 1045. He had come to England with William the Conqueror in 1066, and is known to be living in 1086. He also is known to have had at least two brothers: Peter of Horningsheath and Burchard of Bardwell. Nothing is known about these two men, except that Burchard had a son named Warin.
The Norman Drieu had a son named Walter Drieu.
Walter Drieu married a sister of Peter of Livermore and had a son called Drieu of St. Edmunds.
Drieu of St. Edmunds had a son named Richard Drieu, who was called Sir Richard. According to the Heraldry Society in England, which I have written, the title "Sir" means that he was a knight. This was not an hereditary title, but one which was probably granted as an honor for action in war. There are several others mentioned here with the title "Sir" also.
Richard Drieu had a son named Robert Drieu. Robert married Matilda DeThurston, daughter of Anslem DeThurston.
Robert had a son named John DeThurston Drieu. He was called "DeThurston" and had a son named John Drui. (*name change*)
John Drui had a son named Henry Drieu. (*name change*)
Henry Drieu married Cicley Reynor and had a son named John Drury. (*name change*)
John Drury, who died in 1345, married Ambilla Newton and had a son named Nicholas Drury, who was called "Sir Nicholas".
Sir Nicholas Drury married Agnes DeSaxham, daughter of Sir Simon DeSaxham. They had a son named Roger Drury, who was also called "Sir".
Sir Roger Drury married Margaret Naughton, daughter of Sir Thomas Naughton. They had a son named William Drury, who was also called "Sir".
Sir William Drury married Katherine Swinford, daughter of Sir Thomas Swinford. They had a son named Thomas Drury, who was called "Esquire". According to the Heraldry Society in England, this title would only indicate people of some substance and of possibly private means.
Thomas Drury, Esquire, was born in 1430 and died in 1486. He married Katherine Whitwell, daughter of John Whitwell. They had a son named John Drury, who was also called "Esquire".
John Drury, Esquire, was born in 1456 in Suffolk, England, and died in 1499. He married Margaret Felton, daughter of William Felton. They had a son also named John Drury, and also called "Esquire".
This John Drury, Esquire, married Elizabeth Goldingham, daughter of John Goldingham. They had a son also named John Drury.
This John Drury was born born in Godwick, Norfolk, England. He married Elinor Sidney, daughter of Thomas Sidney, Gentleman. This title meant basically the same as the title "Esquire". John and Elinor had a son named Robert Drury.
Robert Drury, who died in 1624 in Docking, Norfolk, England, married Mary Ratcliff, daughter of John Ratcliff. They had a son also named Robert.
This Robert Drury was born in 1619 in England. He came to Virginia in 1635, ending the English line and beginning the Virginian or American line. He married Alice Harris, and they had a son named John Drury.
John Drury was born in 1644 in Warwick County, VA. He married Deborah Cary and had a son named Robert Drewry (*name change*).
Robert Drewry was born in 1679 in York County, VA. He married Elinor Morgan and had a son named William Drewry.
William Drewry was born in 1727 in York County, VA. He married Rachel Drewry (same last name) and they had a son also named William.
This William was born in 1754 in Southampton County, VA. He married Lucy Person and had a son named John Drewry.
John Drewry was born in 1773 in Southampton County, VA. He married Holly Stephens, and they had a son named Presley Drewry.
Presley Drewry was born in 1793 in Southampton County, VA. He married Cynthia McCraven, and they had a son named John Drewry.
