Notes for WILLIAM W. BIRD: The 1850 census lists William as a farmer living in Sumter County, AL, with his wife and 4 children. The 1850 slave schedule shows he owned 3 slaves -- a 21-yr-old male, 17-yr-old female, and 7-yr-old female. This is probably the William Byrd shown voting in Livingston (Sumter Co., AL) on March 4, 1848, and again on June 3, 1848. W.W. Bird is living in the Alexander neighborhood of Livingston, AL, in February 1851.

Notes for WILLIAM E. "BILL" BIRD: It is thought that the spelling of the name "Bird" was not changed to "Byrd" until sometime after 1900. The 1870 Sumter County, Alabama, census lists William as a 21 year old farm laborer (born in Mississippi) with his wife Ann, age 30, and daughter Margaret, age 1. They were recorded as living at Bennett's Station. The 1900 census lists them in the Earbees beat. He and his wife were buried on the Charles Allison land near Bellamy, Sumter County, Alabama. Their tombstones have been destroyed. The little cemetery sat near the Sucarnoochee River. Through the years, the river has cut into the hills and taken over what was in its path. Much of the cemetery has eroded into the river and been lost forever. Their graves were in the section which is now gone.

She was born 01 Sep 1872 in Sumter County, Alabama1, and died 03 Apr 1963 in Sumter County, Alabama1.
Notes for JOHN HARVEY BIRD: Buried at Siloam Cemetery in Sumter County, Alabama. Tombstone reads "Byrd", as does his name on the Alabama Death Index. He served as a deacon in the Siloam Baptist Church, having been elected in October, 1929. His home was located on the dirt Siloam Road to the left in the first large curve heading down the road from the church. It is said that he would sit on the front porch in his later years and listen for the hymn singing from the church on Sundays, especially in warmer weather when the church windows would be raised. It is thought that John Harvey's generation were the ones who changed the spelling of the name from "Bird" to "Byrd" (sometime after 1900). Rumor has it that members of the family felt the name "Bird" was too "foul" (fowl) !!
Notes for UNKNOWN: It is assumed that this first wife of John Harvey died, possibly in childbirth. She may have been from Lauderdale County, Mississippi.
