A Rookie's Guide to Making Calling Cards
By:A Rookie

BASIC CALLING CARD

This is a beginner's guide how to make a basic calling in Paint Shop Pro written by a beginner.I have learned that in Paint Shop Pro alot depends on your own sense of style. There are so many options in Paint Shop Pro.I have selected two.Using a tube for your image.A colored border and background. If I have all ready have you scrathing your head. Just scroll down to the bottom for links on hints, help, and other tutorials.

THINGS NEEDED

  • Paint Shop Pro
  • A Tube of your choice
  • A little patience and perseverance
  • Somewhere to go for questions if you get stuck.
    Texas Rose Grahics Forum
  • The credo There's always edit/undo.

The Blank Canvas

Okay let's get started. First under file select new. You now should see a menu with a place to put size and choice of background colors.

You need to select the following:
  • Under image dimensions put width:250 hieght:175 leave reslutions set at 72, pixels, pixels/inch.Under image characteristics set at backgroundcolor:white imagetype:16.7 million colors(24 bit).Click on ok.

    The Preview

Now you are ready for your tube. This is time I place my tube to see what colors and size of the tube would look best.

  • Find the pen and ink well click on it,then at the top go to the control panel, the it's the one by the wrench ,click on it,select your tube, leave or put in 100% this will help you to see if you need to make it bigger or smaller.Keep edit undo and resizing till you have the size you need. size.

    The Colors

  • Go to the eyedropper, select it, then run it over your tube,if you look to the right you will notice that the bottom square under the letters RGB will change play around till you find a color that you think will go with your tube. Then click on the one that you like and and the top square will be that color. This will be the backround color of your card. You can add to your custom color by clicking on the square that should bring up your color menu.Click on: add to custom colors then ok.Click on the second square this will be your border color. You can pick a contrasting color.Or alot of the time I adjust my background color lighter or darker by selecting the custom color. Then making lighter or darker by silding the arrow on the paint palette up and down. You can also just select a color from the paint palette. Once you have picked out your background color (first square on the right) and your border color(the second square).Edit undo your tube. If you have the colors you want, your tube is the size you need. Let's move on.

    The "Painting"

    • Now we are ready to "paint". Go to the paint can it's the one under the spray can. Hold it over your blank canvas and click.Whala, There should now be a color on your canvas. It should be the same color as the the first square on the right.

    • Now you are ready for your border. Find Image on the top.Click on it.Now you should see another menu, go to add borders, this will bring up another menu. On this menu you should input the size of your border. Let's have all the numbers the same.Top, right.left and bottom. You can use the size on this, because you can always edit/undo. Try out the size of your border till you are happy with it. If you don't like your color choices, just edit/udo,till you have a blank canvas again and start over. HINT:For this tutorial I would suggest that you make your border any where between 5 and 10. If you are happy with your colors and border size~~ It's Tube time.

    The Tube

    • Go to the inkwell and pen.The tube that you chose should still be selected and the size should still be the same. If you would like to double check this. Go to the top tool bar by wrench and click on the control panel.Everything as it should be? Good. If not adjust it now. Close out the control panel menu.

I hate to admit to "SHUDDER" layer use,but it is the easiest way to put your tube on your canvas and be able to move it around without edit/undo. Okay are you ready? Here we go: At the top tool bar go to image select new. This will bring up a layers menu.Take a deep breath and It should be set Layer1.BlendMode:Normal.Opacity:100%.Group:0 Layer is visible should be checked. Both Masks should be checked.Blend Ranges,Blend if the gray channel is on.This layer is:00 andthe underlying is 00. Finally click ok. You should not have had to make any changes,I believe these are the default settings.
Now put you tube on the canvas. If it is not where you want it and it never usually is go to the mover, it's the one with all the arrows.Fifth from the top. Place it over your tube and move it where you want it.When you are happy with the placement of your tube go back to layers and select merge. It will give you to choice on how to merge either one is okay. Now we have our background color, border and tube image. The text comes next.

    The Words

    • This is of of the easy things to do in Paint Shop Pro. click on the A and this will bring up yet another menu On this menu you will have a choice of fonts, regular, italic, bold italic, and font sizes.I have center checked along with floating and antialias. There is a preview box so you can see what each font looks like. Now you will need to choose a text color the text color is the first square if you left it alone you would not be able to see your text because it would be the same color as your back ground.Click on the first square. This brings up your color palette. Choose a color. Make sure that color is in your first square.Type in what you want on your card. Then click ok. You should see lots of wiggling lines, marching ants,or wiggly worms. Select the mover again and move the text where you want it. To get it to stop wiggling do this:Click on selections on top tool bar, choose select one this will get your text where you can read it.If you don't like it.If it's to big to small edit/undo till it's gone and change size or font. Play around with this till you are happy with what you have. If you are happy with your card you are now ready to save it.

    Save It

    • If you are happy with the way your card looks you are ready to save it.Close out your image. Paint Shop Pro will then ask you it you want to save the changes to image (it will have a number) choose yes. Name your card and save it as a gif or jpg. If you choose to save it as a gif you will get a message saying it needs to be compressed that okay don't worry. click ok.
HINT: If you need to stop while making your card name it and save it as a Paint Shop Pro image in your image folder. Then when you need to work on it again all you have to do is open and start painting.

    The Nerve

    • Now that you have made your card, name it and saved it as a gif or jpg all that you need to do is to uploaded to your server. Now your card is ready for the web. You can post it at message boards, guestbooks, emails put it on your web site. All you need is the nerve. Come on don't be shy. Let us see that card.

    A Few Last Words

This is just a easy basic card. I didn't even touch on fliters. There are a multiude of filters and endless ways to use them. You have several included in your Paint Shop Pro. One filter that you can buy that I highly recommend is Blade Pro. There are plently of free filters for download to. The use of filters makes your card unique. They easy way to learn fliters is to just start expermenting with them. Because you can always edit/undo. Have fun in Paint Shop Pro.
