RESEARCH PAPER

Since the guidelines set by the ECE Department clearly states that the research paper must be about recommendations regarding ANY TOPIC, that means we can raise non-ECE related proposals or recommendations for our companies. Actually, the company I worked with doesn't have any problem with regards to the technical operations like they have state-of-the-art and top-of-the-line broadcasting equipments both in satellite and microwave. Their audio equipments, consoles, radios are quite OK too. So I guess I don't have any recommendations on their technical operations.

What I have here are recommendations that are really not that ECE-related. Instead, they are related to economics, practicality, and additional facilities that I think is vital in improving their operations as a broadcast network.

1.LAUNCHING OF A TELEVISION STATION:

The Manila Broadcasting Company boasts of having almost 200 radio stations nationwide. They've launched several ambitious projects to bring radio entertainment to places where radio signals once didnt reach... and they succeeded in that. Like if ABS-CBN is the Philippines' largest TV network, no doubt MBC is the Philippines' largest radio network in terms of areas covered. With this now a reality, I think MBC should now focus on putting up a television station which could share the MBC brand of entertainment as we are now familiar with. Their radio station DZRH has a collection of award-wining soap operas, perhaps they can bring it on to a wider spectrum of audience through the use of the influential TV. Their powercast news anchors and reporters will get the exposure they need if they have a live TV newscast. They can help more less-fortunate Filipinos if they bring their public service programs on radio to TV. If they can invest on millions of pesos for radio, I don't see any reason why not to invest another set of millions for setting up a TV station. They would cover more Filipinos since in all urban and some rural areas TV is a staple for every home. And TV is visual, that's why its a superior way of entertaining people. And they'll even help in the problem of unemployment!

2.LAUNCHING OF A COMPANY WEBSITE:
The internet is envisioned as the future means of communicating, doing business, and sharing views from people of different cultures. As a broadcasting company, MBC should realize this and they should embark on a website. As of May 2000, they still dont have a link to cyberspace. But I heard that its construction is being planned. And in this website, they can educate the surfers about MBC, like their historical background, vision, company activities, forces behind the company, etc. They can even add some extra-curricular info and services like NEWS online, chatrooms, surveys(for DZRH), program skeds, games, e-mail requests(for FM stations), company profiles to spice up your website. And for advertisers to contact the company if the phone's busy and the traffic's hell. The bottom line is through this MBC website, many people will be aware of the company's stations and activities and at the same time interact with them too.

I have made a sample website for one of their stations, YES! fm 101.1 MHz. Click here to check it out!

3.PURCHASE OF ANOTHER M-SAT(MOBILE SATELLITE)
This is important in a broadcast network especially now that relevant news is happening not only in Metro Manila but in the provinces. Currently they have 1 m-sat. I think(and many others think the same) this is insufficient. They used it in such huge coverages as APEC meeting and Marlboro Tour. They currently use it in live PBA coverages. I mean the value it brings to the company's operations is unmatched! And imagine having two or even three m-sats roving in faraway places where the action is.

4.REFORMATTING OF IT'S TWO MANILA-BASED FM STATIONS
It's a matter of economics. Currently, MBC's two Manila FM stations:Yes!-FM(101.1MHz) and LoveRadio(90.7MHz) share the same of format/programming. Like if you try to listen to these two FM stations, they offer almost the same entertainment to the listening public. They both cater to the C,D,E crowd. And because they touch the same turf, it looks like they're competing against each other when in fact they belong to the same company. What I mean is that one of them should give up it's format and transform into something that'll appeal to the class A and B this time. and the company will benefit because advertisers which target a wide array of consumers through radio will have their products advertised in their radio stations, regardelss of which class or demograph he/she belongs. With this move, their listeners will probably increase... and revenues, too!

NICE MOVE

Recently, the engineers at MBC moved the location of the transmitters of their FM stations from Strata 2000 to One San Miguel Tower in Ortigas. The old location, also in Ortigas Center, has become an unideal location for a radio transmitter since it is currently being dwarfed by it's neighboring buildings which are still under construction. Their transmitter requires no interferences from such obstructions as tall buildings so they moved it to a much much higher location at 52-storey high One San Miguel Tower. Now you can hear Yes!-FM and LoveRadio DZMB crisp and clear wherever you go!
