Dragon Ball Z: The Great Dragon Ball Legend
Surprisingly, it is very much like the fantastic
DBZ game for the PC-Engine (TurboGrafx-16). The main difference is that in this game
there can be up to 3 characters on either side of the battle. The battles are fought until the
balance of power is swayed completely in one direction, after which the selected character
unleashes a huge and usually spectacular attack on his opponent. Speaking of characters,
there are a lot of them! After beating the game there are a total of 35 characters to choose
from in the Versus mode. Being able to power up and fly fast creates a cool effect, and all of
the sound effects are straight from the show! Watching the battles is at times much like
watching the series. The story starts with the battle with Nappa and Vegeta and moves
through the end of the series (the battle with Boo). In most cases you can make things
happen the way they did in the original series, but you don't have to. All in all this is a great
game!
Dragon Ball Z Ultimate Battle 27
You can choose from 22 different characters! 27 if you have the cheat code entered! This
number of choices is unprecedented. There is a tournament mode. Animation sequences
precede every battle and change depending on who is fighting who. If it is a major battle
from the series, such as Gotenks vs. Super Boo, then it mimics the occurance on the show.
The character sprites are all cell animated by the show's actual animators. The scenery is
3-D rendered. Rather than using a line to split the screen when the characters are far a
part, the characters are scaled down. There is a build up battle in which you can play
through the game over and over, building up your chosen characters strength and then
saving it to a flash ram cart. Then you can battle it out with a buddy and his built up
character. The best thing about this game, however, is the opening animation, which shows
all of the characters contained in the game. When the cheat code is entered, a special
animation showing the 5 new characters is revealed.
Cheats:
After the opening animation has finished and the title screen appears, quickly press up,
Triangle, down, X, Left, L1, Right, R1. You must do this quickly, but you can try it as many
times as you like until you get it right. When you do, you will hear a chime and a new
animation will load showing Goku as a boy, Kame-sennin, Mr. Satan, Super Saiya-jin level 3
Songoku, and Gogeta. Now the title of the game changes to "Ultimate Battle 27", and you
have 27 players!
Super Nintendo(Super Famicom)
Dragon Ball Z: Legend of the Saiyan
This is the first DBZ game ever made for the Super
Famicom, and in a lot of ways its the coolest. It's not a fighting game. It's an RPG, but
perhaps a more accurate description is that it's a video game customizable card game. You
choose the characters' moves by choosing from one of five cards visible on the screen on
any given turn. A dragon ball on each card represents the turn initiative value, and a
Japanese character represents the type of attack it is. Cool mode-7 sequences really
inhance the game. Occasionally a character will get to make a flying ram attack on their
opponent, in which case it shows the character flying into your face! There are also mode-7
views from the enemy's perspective, like slamming into a mountain, the water, or the
ground. Ouch! You can fly around or walk on the overhead map, and run into enemies in the
classic Final Fantasy style. The game follows the story of DBZ from Raditz to Freeza. If you
like RPGs and can find a copy of this rare game, be sure to pick it up!
Dragon Ball Z: Hyper Dimension
This is a very different Super Famicom DBZ game. To start with, your life bar is the
same as your special move power. This means that battles could last forever, but this also
means that your life goes down when you use special techniques. Lots of careful strategy is
needed to master this new system. Also, characters can dodge into the background. Stealing
an idea from Mortal Kombat 3 and improving on it, you can knock your opponent off the
screen to the left or right, top or bottom, and end up in a new battle field! This way, some
battle fields are totally in the air and some are totally on the ground. There is a very good
story mode as well. In the story mode, losing a battle doesn't necessarily mean the game is
over. Some story mode battles can be lost, but the ending is not as good. When you do have
to continue, however, you are limited by the number of Senzu beans that Kuririn is carrying.
That's kind of clever. The ten characters are: SonGoku, Vegeta, Gotenks, Gohan (finally in
his fighting clothes and not disguised as the Great Saiyaman), Vegeto, Piccolo, fat Mr. Boo,
small Boo, Freeza, and Perfect Cell. The music is miles above the other DBZ Super
Famicom games, and all the characters are drawn very well. In fact, all the graphics, music,
and special attack effects look as if they were done by the Final Fantasy 6 or Chrono
Trigger team! Speaking of special attacks, there are some BIG meteo moves! For example,
SonGoku's starts out with a flurry of quick punches. Then, turning into Super Saiyajin Level
3, he knocks his opponent into the air. As if that wasn't enough, as they are falling he then
turns back to normal Goku (black hair), floats up, raises his arms, and summons a
Genki-Dama that takes up half ot the screen. After throwing it the battle field is consumed
with a huge explosion. Needless to say, it hurts pretty bad. This is the first game where Boo
can actually turn opponents into cookies. He sucks them in, chews on them for a while, then
spits them out. This is easily the best DBZ game for the Super Famicom.
Dragon Ball Z: Super Goku Den 1
This game follows the entire original Dragon Ball series from Goku's first meeting with
Bulma to his defeat of Piccolo Daimao. Everything is here. In fact, the game is divided up
into sections that correspond to the comic books that make up the series. Each time you
have finished a comic you can save the game. The battles take place in standard Japanese
role playing style with Goku in the bottom left and his opponent in the top right. This game
is long! There is a lot to read and learn. If you are unfamiliar with the story and can read
Japanese, this is a great way to get up to speed.
Dragon Ball Z: Super Goku Den 2
This is a continuation of Super Goku Den 1 and
follows the story from Goku's fight at the Tenkaichi Budoukai against Piccolo to his defeat
of Freeza. The interface is much the same but has been improved considerably in several
areas. You still have to select what moves are initiated by particular key presses, but now
the opponent's move is shown on the screen for you to decide how to retaliate. You don't
have to wait for Goku or Gohan to walk to a certain point on the screen. You can attack
whenever you want! A blue border around the name of your move indicates that your
opponent is about to get attacked. A red border indicates that it's your turn to take damage.
Green means that the round is a draw. The graphics are much improved over Goku Den 1.
Transparent glowing effects, scrolling battle fields, and huge fireball attacks really add to
the gameplay.
