Descendants of William (McKellope) McCaleb - Mar 6 1999
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FIRST GENERATION

1.  William (McKellope) McCaleb was born about 1695 in Inverneshire, Scotland.  He died in Inverneshire, Scotland.  Information from Rita Louk:

1.  William (McKellope) MCCALEB-20231
Information from Donna Colwell.
"The McKillips were a sept of the McDonnell of Keppoch Clan.  They were
probably Roman Catholic, and opposed to the Henry VIII line of rulers.
Both the McKillip and McDonnell warriors fought in the "45" to return
Bonney Prince Charles to the thorne.  This is from the McCaleb family, Vol.
1, part 1, page 9, item, 5, by Katie McCaleb Headley.  William also fought
at the Battle of Preston Moor.
>From Dr. James McCaleb of Carlisle, Mississippi wrote to Miss Ella MCaCaleb
of the Pennsyvlania McCalebs:   "Four brothers came together from Scotland
by way of Dublin, Ireland.  They landed on the Carolina Coast.  One of
these brothers was married to Sarah McAlpin, daughter of the Highland Chief
McAlpin, and they settled in South Carolina.  One of these brothers went
West and married an Indian woman, and one remained in North Carolina.  One
brother settled in the Connellsville Basin (Fayette County), Pennsylvania."
Most McCaleb families claim kinship with Robert Bruce and the Stuarts of
England.
Descendants of Jon McCaleb of Orange, North Carolina say that their
ancestor, John, his brother William, McCaleb, two brothers came from Loch
Aber, Scotalnd.
John settled in North Carolina and William settled in South Carolina.

He was married to Mary McDonnell in 1714 in Invergary, Scotland.  Mary McDonnell was born about 1698 in Invergary, Scotland.  Info from Rita Louk:

1S.  Mary MCDONNELL-20232
>From Donna Colwell "The clans and tartans of Scotland places the McDonnells
of Keppoch living east of Loch Lochy, between the towns of Kingussie and
DPithlochry.  (Gaelic for Kingussie--Head of the Firewood)

William (McKellope) McCaleb and Mary McDonnell had the following children:

+2 i. William Neil McCaleb.
3 ii. James McCaleb was born about 1720 in Invergary, Scotland.  Info. From Rita Louk:

SECOND GENERATION

2.  William Neil McCaleb was born about 1715.  He died in 1775 in Pendleton Distri, South Carolina.  Info. From Rita Louk:

2.  William Neil MCCALEB-20233
>From the Dictionary of American Biography, vol. 2, page 560.  William Neil
McCaleb (McKellope) fought at Culloden in 1746 for the cause of Bonney
Prince Charles.  The McCalebs (McKellopes) were a sept of the McDonnells of
Keppoch, and William fought with, or under, the leadership of the major
cclan at the battle.  Because the armyh of William, Duke of Cumberland was
hunting down the followers of Bonney Prince Charles, William McCaleb, wit
his consort Sarah (MacAlpin) McCaleb, fled in 1746 to Ireland, and they
immigrated from Dublin, leading in Charlestown, Province of South Carolina,
in the same year.
Tradition says that there was much suffering aboard ship, becuase the ship
was lost at sea for many weeks, and that a child was born aborad ship,
presumably to a McCaleb.  Some say that several brothers came from Scotland
together.
Two of three of William McCaleb's brothers were aboard the same ship.
William Neil McCaleb and his wife moved inland, and according to traiditon,
settled either in South or North Carolina, with "other exiled followers of
Bonney Prince Charles"  .  Evidence seems fairy conclusive that the
McCalebs settled in the area of Lancaster and Chesterfield counties, South
Carolina, or Ansor and Mecklinburg Counties, North Carolina.
There place and date of marriage is not proven.

 14.  William Neil MCCALEB-21481
He never married

He was married to Sarah McCalpin in 1745/46 in Dublin, Ireland.  Sarah McCalpin was born in 1715 in Scotland.  She died in Pendleton Distri, South Carolina.  Info. From Rita Louk:

5.  Enos (Aneas McKillip) McCaleb was born about 1735 in Scotland.  He died in 1803 or 1811.  He served in the military.  Was in Revolutionary war  He was christened in Rockbridge Co., Virginia.  Info. From Rita Louk:

5.  Anis (Enos) (Aneas McKillip) MCCALEB Rev War-4269
Could have been born in North Carolina. Katie McCaleb Headley speculates
that Enos may have married an indian woman, and may have therefore adopted
"Heathenish" ways, because he was called into court to show why "he fails
to bring up his children...in a Christian like manner".
Also have a note that he might also have a son by the name of Eli, who
lived in Madison County, Alabama, but I am not sure. Anis McCaleb was paid
for service in the Revolution War, from March 1784, to April 1785 (North
Carolina Revolutionary Army Accounts), and was listed as coming from the
Wilmington District of North Carolina, but there is no further evidence of
him in that district later.
Katie McCaleb Headley speculates that this Enos may have been the brother
who married an Indian woman, and may have therefore adopted "heathenish"
way. However, she points out that Jean, Hannah and Samuel were married by
ministers and therefore have been more "Christian" than the court supposed.
Another hunch would be that they not have attended church regularly
Last name could also be spelled "Anis McCalop".
There is a note that his father might also be Anis McCaleb.
Donna Colwell says he was born in Scotland I had Virginia, so put Virginia
as place of baptism until further proof.   She does not have a death date.
I said about 1775.  Donna also believes that the father of Enos is another
Enos who was born in Scotland, and that this Enis was born in Rockbrige
Virginia.  She believe there is a generation missing here, and that the
missing Enos was the one that died in Alabama, and his will was probated in
Madison County, Alabama in 1803..
>From  Early Settlers in the Mid-Colonies, William Farrar, in Sutro Library,
San Francisco:  Four brothers came to America following the 1746 defeat at
Collodon.  They are: William Neil MCCaleb, who settled in the Penleton
District of North Carolina, James who settled in the Cabarrus County, North
Carolina, John who settled in Pennsylvania, Enos who settled in Rockbridge
County, Virginia.
Need to check records in the Rockbridge County, Virginia area and the
Wilmington District, North Carolina.
Have note that Enos McCaleb was a patriot soldier from North Carolina in
the Revolutionary War.)
His children; Hannah, Jean and Polly were all married by Presbyterian
ministers in Rockbridge County.

He was married to Margaret (Peggy) (?) about 1775.  Enos (Aneas McKillip) McCaleb and Margaret (Peggy) (?) had the following children:

He was a representative from the 62nd district from Butler Co.
                                        .
According to Dr. Carey Hartenbower, John Hiram
Hartenbower was in the California Gold rush in 1850, (Not 1949) before he

to Colorado, and reportedly had a claim at Cripple Creek.  I have a
marriage date of Ann McCaleb of Dec 5 1853. He also served as a county

the older men in the House (meaning house of Represenative), and one whose
previous legislative experience is likely to add much  to his usefulness
and to his influence among his aassociates, is John H. Hartenbower.  In
politics he was formerly a deomocrat, but was elected to the House of 1891
by the People's party of the sixty-second district, which consists of a
number of townships in Butler county, and the city of Douglass.  He was
born in Green County, Kentucky, and is sixty-two years old.  Is a married
man, and connected with thePresbyterian church.  He was elected to the
Legislature of Minnesota in 1855, by the People's party, and by the people
to the legislature of Iowa in 1869.  He also served as a county supervisor
in Minnesota.  He is now enganged in farming and mining."
I also have a record that he was born in Green Co., Kentucky
I have a note that Walter Hartenbower's grandson still lives on the old
Hartenbower homestead
Have note by Edna Ruth Jacobus, that John Hiram could give a great
political speech, but didn't take care of his family well.
According to John Bruce Kelley he had a claim in Western Kansas, near Hill
City or Goodland, and he worked in a lead mill in Pueblo.  Jesse

Random Notes:
May Kelley Gaugh said that Hartenbowers had brown eyes.  Colleen has brown
eyes.  He also always had a mustache.
Also have information that John Giles Hartenbower was born in Winterset,
Iowa, or McGregor Iowa.  Winterset is in Madison Co. Iowa.   John Giles
Hartenbower is reported to have moved to Neosho Rapids, Kansas in  March
1916, according to Jesse Hartenbower. He died at the Stine Nursing Home in
Emporia, KS Lelia Kelley said that John Gilles Hartenbower moved to Neosho
Rapids in 1916, after he got unhappy with a neighbor and moved the whole
family.
According to Jesse and Lelia, John Giles Hartenbower was in the Oklahoma
Land Rush, and did claim a homestead, which he traded for a team of mules
and a wagon.
Carolyn Kelley Schroeder remembers that John Giles Haratenbower always said
to Carolyn when she whistled " Whistlin' girls and crowing hens always come
to some bad end!"
He moved in with Lelia Kelley some time after the birth of his wife
Emmelia. Lelia Kelley said that he was much loved by his wife, Emmelia and
that she would call him, "Mr. Hartenbower", and he was admired and
worshiped by him, and much respected.  She also said tht He was a "very
kind" and very even tempered".  He was a "Very Proud Man" and he called her
"Le Le".  If Lelia got in trouble, he would say to her, "Now, Now, Le Le".
Lelia Kelley said that John and Emmelia went to church regularly and that
the whole family went.  She thinks it was the Christian Church
Jesse Hartenbower said that John Giles Hartenbower lived in about 3, or
less different places in Neosho Rapids.
According to Lelia and Jesse, John and Emmelia made butter and pressed it
with a mold and packed their butter in ice to take it to Wichita to sell.
They went about every two weeks.  They got premium money for her butter.
It was a 21 mile trip and town and took 3 hours in a wagon.  They also sold
eggs.  Jesse said they sold about 30 cases of eggs & 60-80 pounds of
butter.  She had a butter press.  It was a very important source of income
for them. It was in l pound packages.
According to Jesse, he (Jesse) was very easily humilitated (I think he
meant embarrased and was very sensitive).  He said his father could
humiliate him.
Jesse remembers that once his father, John made fun
of him because he wanted to go to a track meet and watch his brothers
compete. I believe that John Hartenbower was the man of the family and
Jesse remembers always cutting up a bunch of wood for the stove and for
winter.
John always got up and started the fire in the mornings.  Jesse said that
his father could get mad but that he always kept in under control.  Jesse
remembers getting in trouble once when dinner was on the table and he was
outside playing, and that his father came out and that Jesse went right to
the table. Jesse had a lot of respect for him.   He was a caring man but he
made you mind.
In Dec of 1993, Lelia remembers growing up on a farm which was located
about 5
or 9 miles from Rose Hill.  They had chickens and cows.  Jesse remembers
that once Andy Hartenbower got married in Douglass, Ks., and that it was
cold outside and that they went to the wedding in a wagon pulled by mules
to the wedding and that John had put hay in the wagon to keep them warm.
Using hay in the wagon was often done.  Have note that it was an old spring
wagon; and that it was when Andy's oldest girl got married.  According to
John Bruce Kelley, John Giles would "Cluck" "Cluck" to the horses.
In 1952 or 1954 when John Giles was living with Lelia and Leo, he left and
was gone all night long.  Lelia and Leo were scared to death.  They found
him the next morning, about a mile or two from the house.  He had pulled
grass around him to keep him warm, but he was o.k.   Colleen also remembers
one time when she was visiting that she had left a cigarette lit in a
bedroom, and it had fell and the stool it fell on to was smoldering when
the family arrived home.  John had been home at the time, but was sitting
in a rocking chair with the door open saying that it was getting smokey in
the house.  It was not long after that that he was taken to the nursing
home.
Rita remembers that the bedroom he
used was small, but had a wonder real feather matress on it, and that it
was fun to jump on it.  His bedroom was made into the bathroom later on.
He probably came to Douglass Kansas about 1883 from Hill City, and that
Andrew and Mary, and Walter and Dim Livingston Hartenbower came in 1872.
George and and John ame in 1883.   His father was silver mining at the
time.
Have note from John Bruce Kelley that John Giles like to sing, he was a
baritone "Sinfesto", and that people would get together to sing.
Have note from John Bruce Kelley that John Giles borrowed $700 or $800 from
his uncle Jeremiah Hartenbower (and or) tht John Giles borrowed money from
Uncle Jerry to buy 160 acres at Rose Hill, KS. 2 1/2 miles east, 1 mile
north.
John Giles received $1000.00 when his uncle in California died.

He was married to Emmelia Hoover (daughter of John Hoover and Elizabeth Vallery (Vollery)) on Feb 18 1892 in Couglass, Butler County, Kansas.  Emmelia Hoover was born on Feb 7 1871 in Jacksonville, Morgan County, Illinois.  She died on Mar 10 1949 in Emporia, Lyon  County, Kansas.  Info. From Rita Louk:

59S.  Emmelia HOOVER-38
Random Notes:
I do not believe that Emmelia had a middle name, at least that is what I've
always been told.
Jesse and Lelia had a great love for their mother.  She was the mother,
doctor, and worked very hard from sunset to sunrise.  She did all the
cooking, washing, mending, cleaning and doctoring.  She always made fresh
bread. Often 4 loaves at a time or more.  Her life was her husband and
childaren.  She had a very pleasant and sweet disposition.  Lelia said that
Emmelia was always partial to her boys.  She put her husband on a pedestal,
and adored him.
They lived in Rosehill and about every two weeks John and Emmelia would go
by buggy to Wichita to sell butter and eggs.  Jesse said they sold about 30
cases of eggs and 60-80 pounds of butter.  She had a butter press, and
always got premium prices for her butter. Each containter of butter she
made was one pound. It was packed in ice.  It was a very imortant source of
their income.
Jesse also remembers his mother making bread.  She had a wood burning stove
(and later a coal-oil stove).  It had no temperature control on it and
Emmelia would open the oven and tell is the temperature was right for the
bread.  It it was to hot she would fan it with her apron and cool it down.
Jesse said that she was a good doctor and did all the doctoring for the
family.
He remembers that once that Aunt Carrier was sick and Emmelia went to
Tonica, Illinois to take care of her.  Emmelia had an absess once of her
back and it was an open sore and she was really down in bed with it.  Jesse
said that Harvey did the cooking then.
Jesse said that they got oranges in their stockings at Christmas time.  A
banana was a real treat.  To get any fruit was a real treat.
In 1916 John and Emmelia Hartenbower moved to Neosho Rapids.  Bernice &
Hazel went to Frog Pond School, and Lelia and Jim went to Neosho Rapids,
and that Jim drove to school
Have note from John Bruce Kelley that Emmelia and John were kind to each
other, but not physically affectionate to teach other, meaning that you
didn't see them kiss or show affection to each other.  The note also said
that Emmelia rode horses sidesaddle and loved to read magazines after
chores, and liked to read love story magazines
In august 1993, Lelia Kelley said that, "Emmelia was partial to her boys
and called her husband (John) "Mr. Hartenbower" with much respect.  She
very much admired her husband and even worshipped him".  Lelia repeated
this over and over.
According to her obituary she died in St. Mary's hospital.  She had a
stroke or a heart attack.
She and John Hartenbower were married at the Hoover residence, near Gordon,
Ks by Elder J.C. Cain.

1S.  Mary MCDONNELL-20232

of Keppoch living east of Loch Lochy, between the towns of Kingussie and
DPithlochry.  (Gaelic for Kingussie--Head of the Firewood)

William (McKellope) McCaleb and Mary McDonnell had the following children:

2S.  Sarah MCALPIN-20236
Infor. from Donna Colwell.

William Neil McCaleb and Sarah McCalpin had the following children:

+6 i. William Captain McCaleb.
7 ii. Hugh McCaleb was born about 1748 in Pendleton Distri, South Carolina.  Info. From Rita Louk

7.  Hugh MCCALEB-20238

8.  Archibald MCCALEB-20239
Infor. from Donna colwell
He settled from South Carolina to Knox county, Tennessee.

22S.  John Hiram (Hartenbaur) HARTENBOWER-47
John H. Hartenbower could have been born in Louisville, Kentucky.   He came
to Winterset, Madison, Co. Iowa in 1866.  He owned 160 acres of land on
section 25 and was elected as a state represented in 1870. On Feb. 18, 1873
he was elected as a "Master" of the Granage No. 895.  He was a farmer, and
later moved to Douglass Kansas.    He was in the legislature in Iowa after
1850 (1869), In Minnesota, in 1855, by the People's Party, and in Kansas
in 1891-1992 as a member of  the Alliance Party, or by the People's Party.
He was a representative from the 62nd district from Butler Co.
                                        .
According to Dr. Carey Hartenbower, John Hiram
Hartenbower was in the California Gold rush in 1850, (Not 1949) before he
was married.
He was a member of the Populist Party.  He also made numerous expeditions
to Colorado, and reportedly had a claim at Cripple Creek.  I have a
marriage date of Ann McCaleb of Dec 5 1853. He also served as a county
supervisor in Minnesota.  He started out in politics as a democrat, but
became a Populist. Mr. Siira added the name of the child Glenn.  I had no
information or heard of him before.
I have a note which says the following of John Hiram Hartenbower, "Among
the older men in the House (meaning house of Represenative), and one whose
previous legislative experience is likely to add much  to his usefulness
and to his influence among his aassociates, is John H.
Jesse
Hartenbower took his father out to the homestead.
It is written that Andrew and Walter and Isabella Appleton Hartenbower came
to Douglass about 1872, and that John & George came in 1883 from Hill City.
I added a christening place as Louisville, Kentucky, so I could check see
it and check on records there.  There is a possibility he was born in
Louisville.

59.  John Giles HARTENBOWER-39

Cain.
