HOLMES REBUILD PROJECT

Sound Roller

Holmes projector film sound roller

An adaptor was fabricated to convert the second roller above the sound gate. The back plate of the adaptor is made out of steel and is tapped for a new roller shaft. The back plate also has an offset bend so the roller will be properly positioned.
The brass tube sleeve will slide over the original roller shaft. The tube is made from three pieces of brass tubing that fit one inside the other. A recess was needed at the back of the sleeve to fit over the original roller shaft assembly. The inner brass tubing was positioned for this recess at the back end of the sleeve. The front of the sleeve was sweat soldered making the piece solid. The brass sleeve is soldered into the steel back plate.

( Extra roller shafts and roller's were available from modifications to roller's when reel magazines were removed )

Adaptor painted gray and spring. The spring will keep the roller tight against the film.

Original Holmes roller assembly. The two roller's above the sound gate are fixed. Slack in the film causes the film to ride up above the sprocket. Also, too much slack was causing the film to jump off the back edge of the roller before the sound gate. The amount of slack varies from film to film.

Roller adaptor installed on original roller shaft allows roller after sprocket to move and be spring loaded. Spring loaded roller keeps film snug on sprocket and seated on roller before sound gate.
