Ulcerative Stomatitis (Mouth Rot)

Ulcerative Stomatitis is a disease of the upper alimentary tract that effects the oral cavity in reptiles. Reptiles with this condition often refuse to feed as a result of the painful lesions that often are present in the oral cavity. This condition is usually secondary to other conditions, such as a respiratory infection as noted earlier. Other primary causes may include traumatic injuries from live prey animals, a suppressed immune system and stress. Diagnosis is possible upon examination of the mouth and the surrounding tissue. A culture of the infections should be sent to a lab for sensitivity testing to determine the specific bacteria involved and the best antibiotic for treatment. Radiographs of the lungs are also in order to determine if a respiratory infection is the underlying cause.
