WHAT IS A MASON?
Freemasonry is the world's oldest and largest fraternity. It's sole purpose is to make good men better. It's bonds of friendship, compassion and brotherly love have survived through the centuries.
All Freemasons believe in God and in respect for one another. Only men believed to be of the finest character and who advocate their belief in a Supreme Being are considered for membership.
WHO ARE MASONS?
Some of the most famous men in the history of the United States have been Masons, including 9 signers of the Declaration of Independence, 13 signers of the Constitution and 14 United States Presidents: George Washington, James Monroe,Andrew Jackson,James Knox Polk, James Buchanan, Andrew Johnson, Ulysess S. Grant, William McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft,Warren G. Harding, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman and Gerald R. Ford. Masons can be found in all stages of American history and in all walks of life. Lewis and Clark were both Masons. Remember the Alamo? Colonel William Travis, Jim Bowie and Davy Crockett were all Masons. So were Kit Carson and Buffalo Bill Cody. Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, was a Mason, as were Wilbur and Orville Wright. Military Masons include Generals John J. Pershing, Douglas McArthur, Omar Bradley and Matthew Ridgeway; in sports, Cy Young, Ty Cobb, Jack Dempsey, Arnold Palmer and Dr. James Naismith, inventor of basketball. Many are found in show business: John Wayne, Will Rogers, Roy Rogers and Gene Autry; singers Roy Clark, Mel Tillis and Little Jimmy Dickens;actor Ernest Borgnine and comedian Red Skelton. Astronauts Virgil "Gus" Grissom, John Glenn and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, the second man on the moon, all belonged to our fraternity. The rolls of Freemasonry contain such diverse names as Senator Robert Dole and Dave Thomas, founder of the Wendy's hamburger chain; from magician Harry Houdini and aviator Charles Lindbergh to J. Edgar Hoover, founder and first director of the FBI, just to name a few.
HOW DO I BECOME A MASON?
Anyone wishing to become a Mason must ask a Masonic friend to recommend him. He must sign a petition requesting membership, which is voted on by the members of the lodge. The vote must be unanimous.
