WELCOME NICK SABAN ROLL TIDE ROLL

Alabama Football Coach Nick Saban

"Yea, Alabama!"

Yea, Alabama!
Drown 'em Tide!
Every 'Bama man's behind you;
Hit your stride!
Go teach the Bulldogs to behave,
Send the Yellow Jackets to a watery grave!
And if a man starts to weaken,
That's his shame!
For 'Bama's pluck and grit
Has writ her name in crimson flame!
Fight on, fight on, fight on, men!
Remember the Rose Bowl we'll win then!
So! Go, roll to victory,
Hit your stride,
You're Dixie's football pride, Crimson Tide!

The University of Alabama
The History of the Game

The University of Alabama enjoys one of the finest football traditions in the history of the game. With a legacy of excellence that stretches more than 100 years, Alabama boasts one of football's greatest coaches, 12 national championships, 20 Southeastern Conference titles, 16 inductees into the College Football Hall of Fame and 95 All-Americas. E.B. Beaumont was the Tide's first coach, Paul W. Bryant its greatest and Mike DuBose the latest. Beaumont's tenure lasted four games of which Alabama won two. Bryant's tenure was a little longer, he coached the Crimson Tide for 25 years, posting 232 wins against 46 losses and 9 ties. Bryant led his teams to six national championships, 13 SEC championships and 24 consecutive bowl appearances. As a head coach, Bryant logged 323 wins, 85 losses and 17 ties. His win total is the most by any NCAA Division I coach. DuBose is in the second season of his tenure as head coach.

Coach Wallace Wade, for which the road next to Bryant-Denny Stadium is named, was coach of Alabama's first National Championship squad in 1925. Gene Stallings, the Tide's mentor from 1990 to 1996 was the latest Alabama coach to win a national championship. His 1992 squad capped off a unanimous national championship season with a 34-13 win over Miami (Fla.).

Bowl Facts

Alabama went to five consecutive Rose Bowls from 1926-38, posting a 3-1-1 record.

Texas A&M won the statistical battle of the 1942 Cotton Bowl, but Alabama won the game 29-21.

Harry Gilmer put on a show in the 1945 Sugar Bowl, prompting the great Grantland Rice to call Gilmer "the greatest college passer I ever saw."

Alabama enjoyed its last trip to Pasadena and the Rose Bowl with a 34-14 win over Southern California in 1946. It was also the last bowl trip for coach Frank Thomas.

Alabama scored a bowl-record 61 points against Syracuse in the 1953 Orange Bowl, still an NCAA record for most points scored in a bowl game.

The 1959 Liberty Bowl was the start of a string of 24 consecutive bowl trips for Paul "Bear" Bryant.

Alabama finished the 1961 season 11-0, including a New Year's Day romp over Arkansas to win the national championship. Bowling on New Year's Day in 1963 at the Orange Bowl, the Tide beat Oklahoma 17-0 to post a 10-1 season. Only a 7-6 loss to Georgia Tech kept the Tide out of the championship circle in 1962.

Tim Davis kicked a bowl-record four field goals in the Tide's 12-7 win over Ole Miss in the 1964 Sugar Bowl. A 39-28 victory over Nebraska in the 1966 Orange Bowl gave the Tide its second straight national championship.

Northport native Curley Hallman, playing for former Tide assistant coach and then Texas A&M head coach Gene Stallings, had a late interception of a Kenny Stabler pass to seal Texas A&M's 20-16 win over the Tide in the 1968 Cotton Bowl.

Current Tide coach Jeff Rouzie won the game's Outstanding Defensive Player award in the 1970 Bluebonnet Bowl.

The 1973 Sugar Bowl matchup between Alabama and Notre Dame was the first meeting between the two traditional football powers.

The 1975 Sugar Bowl win (13-6) over Penn State, broke the Tide's eight-game postseason losing streak. Alabama stopped Penn State on two consecutive plays inside the one-yard line to preserve the Tide's 14-7 win and the national title during the 1979 Sugar Bowl.

A 24-9 win over Arkansas in the 1980 Sugar Bowl gave Alabama 12 wins on the season, the most victories in a single season in Tide history.

A hard-fought 21-15 win over Illinois in the 1982 Liberty Bowl was coach Paul "Bear" Bryant's 323rd career win. Jeremiah Castille tied the Liberty Bowl record with three interceptions.

All-American linebacker Cornelius Bennett was named Most Valuable Defensive Player in the 1985 Aloha Bowl.

Cornelius Bennett won another MVP trophy, this time in the Tide's 28-6 win over Washington in the 1986 Sun Bowl.

Quarterback David Smith set Alabama records when he completed 33 of 52 passes for 412 yards in the Tide's 29-28 Sun Bowl win over Army in 1988.

Gene Stalling's first bowl game was not his best, losing to Louisville and former Tide assistant coach Howard Schnellenberger, 34-7. Stallings won five straight bowl games after that loss.

Against the heavily favored Miami Hurricanes, Alabama posted its 12th National Championship with a 34-13 victory in the 1993 Sugar Bowl.

Alabama and Ohio State met for only the third time in the 1995 Citrus Bowl. Led by a senior class that posted a 45-4-1 record, Bama won, 24-17.

Gene Stallings went out a winner with a 17-14 win over Michigan in the 1997 Outback Bowl. It was Michigan's only loss in 1997 as the Wolverines went undefeated in the regular season and won the National Championship.
