The Jellicle Mystery

Written by: Dewdrop

A Little girl named Karrie was lying on her bed writing in her diary. She revealed everything in this small, flowery book. She treasured it very much. At her side, as he always was, was her little kitten named Mungojerrie. She stroked Mungojerrie's brighty colored fur as he began to purr.

"What a sweet Kitten you are." she said very soothingly to the animal. Mungojerrie started to doze off to sleep when he heard a noise. A loud crash and the distant cry of a frightened cat.

This cat, who was always getting herself and Mungojerrie into trouble, was called Rumpelteazer. She was very kind to her human friends. She would never EVER even consider biting the hand-or hands in some cases-that fed her. Nor did she ever scratch them or hiss. However, she was mischievous. VERY mischievous!

"What was that?" he asked Rumpelteazer. Then he saw it. "Oh no!" he said with a look of worry on his face. "How did THAT happen? Are you alright? Why...w...why is the lamp on the floor?" he continued

"Uh...well, uh...I uh...I was running from a bird! Uh...yeah! That's it! I was running from a bird!" she replied. This reply, of course, was far from the truth!

"Well how-" he paused, thinking. "Why in Heavyside Lair's name was there a bird in the living room???"

"Uh...I was getting a little warm, what with this thick fur and all, so I opened a window." she answered.

"But I still don't understand how a bird could have gotten inside. There's a screen over the window." he said.

Rumpelteazer paused as her head began to droop in shame. "Ok. It wasn't a bird. It was a sound I heard on the television. It was just a commercial with a dog barking and it scared me. I jumped and ran. That's how I knocked over the lamp." she confessed.

"Oh, I see. But if it was an accident, why did you lie about it?" Mungojerrie asked her.

"I didn't want to get into trouble-" she paused for a minute. "and I was a little embarrassed."

Well, Karrie soon found out about the lamp and told her parents. Rumpelteazer lay in Karrie's lap, sitting by the fireplace. Karrie was very gentle with the cat. Rumpel teazer purred and fell asleep.

The next evening, Karrie had just finished her dinner and asked to be excused from the table. She was excused and so she went to her bedroom and took out her diary from her dressor drawer. She unlocked it, opened it, and began to write.

Dear Diary,

Today was very boring. Not much happened. Iwent shopping with a couple of friends. I bought a pair of jeans, but that's about it. I'll probably have more to write tomorrow. Good night!

-Karrie

Then, just as she was finishing her entry she heard her mother calling her from in the dining room. She went to go see what her mother wanted. She just left the diary on her bed.

Just as she walked out of the room, Rumpelteazer pranced in. The dainty little kitten jumped up onto the bed and, not paying attention, lied down riht on top of the diary. Afew minutes later, Karrie came back to her bedroom.

"Rumpelteazer!" she exclaimed. "Get off the bed! You know you are not supposed to be up there!

Rumpelteazer scooted to the side of the bad and jumped off. Off the bed, anlong with Rumpelteazer, the diary. It felll right in between the night table and the bed. Karrie did not notice that it fell.

She sat down on her bed and got comfortable. She was about to reach for the diary when she realized it wasn't there.

"Where is it? It was right there! My diary! Did someone take it?" she yelled.

Mungojerrie heard her cries and ran into the room. He looked at Karrie wondering what was so important about a little book. Karrie ran around frantically looking for the diary, but of course, she looked everywhere but where it actually was.

Mungojerrie knew that Rumpelteazer was always getting into trouble, so he decided to question her about the missing diary.

"Rummy!" he called.

Rumpelteazer came slowly walking down the hallway, where she would find Mungojerrie.

"Have you seen Karrie's little book?" he asked his companion.

"Mmmm......" she was thinking. "Nope!" she answered, finally.

"You're sure?" He kept at her.

"No, haven't seen it!" she replied.

"Oh, well, Karrie can't find it. She says it just disappeared. Well, if you see it, tell me." he explained.

"Oh? Well, if I see it, I will let you know." she said.

Karrie finally just stopped looking. "You would think it just grew legs and walked away!" she said exasperated.

Later on, Rumpelteazer was wondering about Karries little book. If I find it, maybe they'll let me off the hook about the lamp. She thought. So she set out to search for it. After about an hour of roaming around the house, she was almost ready to give up. Then she found it.

"That's it! I found it!" she exclaimed. Just then, she tookthe tiny little book in her teeth and bagan to walk off with it. She wanted to bring it to Karrie right away. m Just then, Karrie walked in and saw her cat with her diary.

"So YOU had it all along! Well, what does a cat do with a diary? You don't read or write. That's obvious! What use would you have for it?" she questioned.

Mungojerrie heard Karrie yelling and wondered what it was all about. He ran in and soon figured it all out.

After Karrie left the room, Rumpelteazer lay on the floor in shock. Why was she yelling? why was she so angry? I didn't do anything wrong! She thought to herself. "I didn't do it!" she muttered to her friend.

Mungojerrie asked her why she took the book from Karrie. She, of course, denied the whole thing.

"I didn't take it! I promise!" Rumpelteazer began to cry. "Everyone is blaming me! It wasn't me! I found it and was going to take it to her when she found me with it!" she said.

"I believe you. I really do." he reasured his friend.

"You do?" she asked him.

"Of course I do!" He nuzzled her and purred.

Then Karrie came in the room and sat down beside her two cats. Mungojerrie stood in front of Rumpelteazer protectively. She picked Mungojerrie up and set him aside and then picked up Rumpelteazer and started to sctratch her head. Rumpelteazer just purred out of delight. "I'm sorry I yelled at you. I am sure you didn't take it. You wouldn't even know what to do with it if you had it." she apologized to her kitten. Karrie took her two pets in her arms and carried them to the bed and laid down. She turned off the light and fell asleep next to them. The two kittens soon fell asleep also and all was right.
