YWAM Slum Ministries

Slums what are they? Simply people...like Kwaan, the 12 year old daughter of a prostitute, top of her class at school yet now under a very real threat of sexual abuse due to her rough living situation. Then there's Nee, wife of a heroin user, yet now walking firmly in the Lord. She's led many to Christ and has seen God do awesome miracles. And the names go on and on.

People. Poor, yet people like you and I who NEED Christ more than anything else. YWAM Slum Ministries targets the poor, reaching to them with the Good News of Jesus Christ AND practical hands-on mercy ministry. It's Kids Klub, evangelism, discipleship, prayer, English teaching, child sponsorship, follow-up, prison ministry, and clean-up programs. It's tears and laughter, joy and pain whatever it takes to do what Jesus did: "Preach the Good News to the afflicted, bind up the broken hearted, proclaim liberty to captives and freedom to prisoners..." (Isaiah 61:1,2a)

Short Term Opportunities

YWAM Outreach teams are welcome to come for 1 - 3 weeks. Usually we take only 2 - 3 teams per year as we only have a few staff members. These outreaches will be with the poor somewhere in Thailand, working in conjunction with local churches. The team would need to be prepared to serve in whatever capacity God opens up, and that could mean cleaning garbage out of a swamp! At present, we find it difficult to fit in individual volunteers on any short term basis because of language barriers. For a full team, however, we can arrange for a translator.

Long Term Opportunities

Help! Someone please send us long-term staff, people who are called by God to minister His love and mercy to the poor while living AMONG the poor. This means at least one year of Thai language study up-front, because you need to speak the language to minister effectively. By long-term, we mean AT LEAST a 3 year commitment. You will need to come prepared to do anything and everything because that's what living and working among the poor means.

The minimum requirement is to have completed a YWAM DTS. To go through a School of Frontier Missions (SOFM) in the south-east Asia region (Singapore) would be an added benefit.

Financial Needs

Regarding finances, we need finances for child sponsorship of slum kids who want to go to school but can't for financial reasons. We are also planning to do more small loans (no more than US$100 per loan) to encourage slum women to become self-sufficient financially. As with all YWAM Thailand teams, we would welcome sponsorship of Thai staff as Thai churches rarely give financial support to members working outside of the church with a para-church organization.

Would you like to join with us? Please write to us, we would love to hear from you.
