Music baby yeah

The World's Greatest Bands

Ahhhhh music, the soundtrack that accompanies our lives. But what is good? What is bad? I have decided it's all good. Just in different ways. Anyone who's know's me know's I like a decent bit of guitar sound in my music. Aerosmith are my all time favourite band, my favourite guitar player is Steve Vai. I don't stop listening to different music just because it doesn't sound like my favourites and I go into new musical experiences with an open mind. I love the Prodigy, which is unusual as they are dance/techno sorta people. Anyway my current things on my stereo are Eve 6, Bad Religion, Jonny Lang, Type O Negative, Blur, new Supergrass, new Live, Oasis, Nofx, Fuel, Goo Goo Dolls,Candlebox and Sweet Home Alabama by Lynard Skynard. I'm listening to The Doors a lot at the moment, Manic Street Preachers, Seahorses and Pearl Jam.

I also like a bunch of other bands. Anyone want to talk about the following bands or any others really, ICQ me on 12228336 or email me (for addy see bottom of page) I'm also into, Joe Satriani, Iron Maiden, Green Day, Days of the New, metallica, Rage Against The Machine, Longpigs, Nirvana of course, Finley Quaye, China Drum, Everclear, Soundgarden, Garbage, The Verve, Social Distortion, Silverchair, Supergrass, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Radiohead, Offspring, Reef and Stone Temple Pilots. (last update - October 4th)

AEROSMITH
When i was 13 I listened to David "Kid" Jensen play the chart countdown on radio Wyvern on a Sunday afternoon. At the time I listened to charty music. My favorite acts included T'Pau , Gloria Estefan and Paula Abdul. I was sad, I had no musical style. One Sunday on the chart show The Kid played a new song by an old band. A band I hadn't heard before. That band was Aerosmith. The song was "Love In An Elevator". I was hooked. My friend Kev was already a fan and I went over to his house for the next few weeks for some lessons in Aerosmith. His brother tried to get me to listen to Marillion as well but I was having none of that . I listened to some early Aerosmith stuff from the 1970's and I loved it. I went out and bought as much Aerosmith as money would allow. My first 6 or 7 cd's were all Aerosmith. Steven Tyler changed my life. His vocals were so different to anything I had heard before. The bands guitars and drums and so forth sounded so good to me. It was on that day when I first heard "Love In An Elevator" that I became a rocker. I still am and I'm proud of it.
MUST LISTEN TO : Pretty much everything. Sweet Emotion is one must ya can't miss, Back In The Saddle, Last Child, the list goes on and on. Even the new album isn't bad.
AVOID : Armageddon soundtrack even though Sweet Emotion is on it. Gems.

STEVE VAI
A couple of years after my Aerosmith experience I saw Expo 92 on TV. It was from Seville. I still have it on tape. I watched rock night eagerly anticipating some good acts. Extreme played but apart from that it was a kick ass gig. But what caught my eye the most. A man comes on stage with a sparkly guitar and more sparkily clothes and starts playing the opening parts to a song called "Liberty". It was amazing. I was blown away. The man was Steve Vai and the concert inspired me to go and buy his album "Passion and Warfare". I knew 2 things when I heard him play.
1. I WANTED TO PLAY GUITAR SO BAD
and 2. there was no point me doing 1. because I'd never be that good.
If you have never heard Steve play guitar you haven't lived. He is superb. His solos intricate and his chords beautiful. Also on the bill at Expo was a guy called Joe Satriani who's pretty damn good too.
MUST LISTEN TO: For the Love Of God, Blue Powder, Erotic Nightmares, The Animal, pretty much all of Passiona and Warfare and The Road To Mnt Calvary by his band Vai. Good stuff. Not just Greasy Kids Stuff.
AVOID : The G3 thing with Joe Satriani, Alien Love Secrets.

PEARL JAM
I heard Pearl Jam unplugged one day and the very next morning I bought "Ten". Eddie Vedder has the most soothing vocals. Everyone around me was into Nirvana at the time, or Guns and Roses or Metallica but I just loved Pearl Jam. Their campaign against Ticketmaster and other such causes has resulted in the world being robbed of at least 2 fantastic Pearl Jam albums. Their lack of musical committment also resulted in the poor No Code album. I'm dissappointed of course but I still love the band. Mike McCready has some wonderful guitar solos. Just great stuff.
MUST LISTEN TO : Black, Oceans, Porch, Jeremy, Leash, Cordoroy, Whipping, Nothing Man, Habit, Hail Hail, Brain of J, Given To Fly, Rats, Daughter and Animal.
AVOID : Heyfoxymophandlemommathatsme, bugs, No Code.

NIRVANA
Well I guess I had to talk about Nirvana but Tourette is a much bigger fan than me and her page has lots of good Nirvana stuff. Anyway, Nirvana weren't a big influence on my life like they were with many people but so many bands since have picked up the attitude and the excellent drums and grunge guitar sound Grunge never died as never do any music forms. The spirit of music is embedded in Kurt Cobain's lyrics and in the sound the band created. I was introduced to Nirvana by Dave Partridge the world's worst stripper. It's the only thing of any worth he has ever done,(chuckle, not really dave if you're reading). MUST LISTEN TO : Sliver, Teen Spirit, I hate myself and I want to die, Come as you are and about a girl unplugged, all of In Utero.
AVOID : Bleach if you don't want to listen to real grunge lol, Something In The Way which is too dull.

And now without further ado and because I like lists. My favorite albums of all time. 1. AEROSMITH - Toys In The Attic(1975)My favorite album of all time. Finely made from start to finish. Including the timeless Sweet Emotion, Walk This Way and Adam's Apple. Also one of the saddest records Aerosmith ever did with the bittersweet You See Me Crying and No More No More about life on the road and for comedy value - Big Ten Inch Record what more could you ask for?

2. PEARL JAM - Vitalogy More varied than the pleasant Ten and more finished than the Raw sounding Vs and not matched by anything since. Simply a great cd. Near flawless. Mike McCready's screaming guitar and Eddie Vedders moving vocals come together with and excellent songwriting makes it a masterpiece. It starts out on fire with Last Exit and Spin The Black Circle, sheer Rock and Roll. Drifts into melodic and beautiful balads with Nothingman and Immortality and bursting into sheer noise and energy with Whipping and Satan's Bed. The highlights for me are Corduroy and Better Man which my brothers band now does a cover of. 3. U2 - Rattle and Hum Technically this is a live album but it incompasses everything good about the band. Just prior to being huge and full of wonderful Irish enthusiasm it was just the right time for this. Starting with a cover of Helter Skelter and driving on into Van Diemen's Land and the superb Desire. High Points are a cover of Jimi Hendrix's All Along the Watchtower, Pride, I still Haven't found what I'm looking for, Bullet The Blue Sky and a lovely ending with All I Want Is You. 4. NIRVANA - In Utero Well made stuff. Designed to suprise anyone not expecting anarchic mayhem with guitar and screaming. Utterly brilliant. Heart Shaped Box is well worth the price of the cd on it's own. But it doesn't stop there. The mellow Pennyroyal Tea and All Apologies are good foils to the crazynes. Radio Friendly Unit Shifter, tourettes(had to mention that baby, lol) and Milk It are madness personified. The cd is a joy to listen to. It obeys no rules.
