Antoinette, Marie
Marie Antoinette was an extravagant French queen that was guillotined on October 16 1793.
Baillard, Andre
Andre Baillard was strapped to the bascule when he recieved clemency on May 7 1932.
Berger, Leon
Leon Berger was an assistant executioner and carpenter who improved the guillotine. He developed the guillotine that all other guillotines after 1872 were based on.
Bontemps, Roger
Roger Bontemps was convicted of the killing of a prison gaurd and prison nurse. He commited mutiny at the Clairvaux prison. He was executed for the murder of Guy Girardot and Nicole Comte along with his accomplice, Claude Buffet.
Buffet, Claude
Claude Buffet aided in the murder of Nicole Comte and Guy Girardot. He and his accomplice were executed at 4:45 a.m. in the Sante prison on November 28 1972.
Chervalier, Marcel
Marcel Chervalier succeeded Andre Obrecht in 1976 as executioner. He was the last executioner in France, and he worked until the abolition of the death penalty in 1981.
Corday, Charlotte
Charlotte Corday was executed for the murder of Jean-Paul Marat.
Deibler, Anatole
Anatole Deibler succeeded his father, Louis Deibler, as executioner in 1898. While on his way to execute Pilorges in Rennes, he collapsed with a fatal heart attack. He died in the Metro station in 1939.
Deibler, Joseph
Joseph Deibler emigrated from Germany around 1816, and became the first Deibler to work in France. He was an executioner.
Deibler, Louis
Louis Deibler became the first man to move from assistant executioner to executioner for all of France when he succeded Clement Sanson in 1847.He resigned, leaving the job of executioner to his son in December of 1898.
Desfourneaux, Henri
Henri Desfourneaux succeeded Anatole Deibler, and was the executioner at the last public execution.
Fesch, Jacques
On July 25 1957, Jaques Fesch was guillotined for the murder of a policeman. On July 25 1987, a cardinal pleaded President Mitterand to give Jaques his honor back. The cardinal stated that Jaques was an innocent man when he was executed.
Guidon
He was the carpenter who was to build the first guillotine, however he did not do so because his price was too high.
Guillotin, Joseph-Ignance
Dr. Guilltotin suggested a mechanical device for carrying out the death penalty, but he did not invent the guillotine.
Heindreicht, Jean-Francois
Jean-Francois Heindreicht was an executioner in France.
Landru, Henri-Desire
Henri-Desire Landru was a serial wife killer. He was guillotined in 1922.
Le Gros, Francois
Francois Le Gros was sentenced to three months of prison for a breach of scaffold etiquette. At the execution of Charlotte Corday he slashed the cheek of her severed head.
Louis, Antoine
Antoine Louis described a guillotine, and the first guillotine was based on his description. He was a member of the Academie Chirurgical.
Maurice, Philippe
Philippe Maurice was sentenced to be guillotined on September 2 1981, but he received clemency from Francois Mitterand. He would have been the last person to be guillotined if he had not received clemency.
Obrecht, Andre
When the post of executioner fell vacant, Andre Obrecht was chosen out of over 400 other applicants.
Pelletier, Nicolas-Jacques
Nicolas-Jacques Pelletier was executed on April 25 1792 on the Place de Greve. He was the first official victim of the guillotine.
Roch, Nicolas
Nicolas Roch succeeded Francois Desmortes as executioner in !843. He occupied this post at Lons-le-Saulnier until 1853 when he succeeded Henri Ganier at Amiens. In 1872 he occupied the post of executioner at Paris. Among his five assistants were MM. Berger, Ganier, and Desfourneaux.
Sanson, Charles-Henri
Charles-Henri Sanson was the executioner in Paris during the revolution.
Henry Sanson succeeded his father, Charles-Henri Sanson at the end of the 18th century.
Schmidt, Tobias
Tobias Schmidt was one of the men involved in the building of the first guillotine.
Weidmann, Eugene
Eugene Weidmann was executed on June 17 1939 outside of the prison in Versailles. He was the last person to be guillotined in public. He was executed for six murders.
