This site is all about the guillotine. The guillotine is a mechanical device used for decapitation. It has been used for many years in France, and there is evidence of a guillotine like machine as early as 1307. The guillotine was said to have been a humane form of execution killing the victim instantly. The shield however, was where the photographer was to stand in order to pull forward the severed head incase the body tried to retrieve it. Guillotin was not the man that invented the guillotine, his name just stuck with it because he suggested a mechanical device to execute people humanely.
