GILES' TIPS: My name is Giles. I ride a a GT Lobo (22"), set up with drop handlebars, plastic pedals, a single 6 tooth chainring (for ground clearance), no brakes (why would you need brakes for downhill ?), RST 180 suspension forks (from my mums bike). I have a quill headset, a suspension stem, a suspension seatpost, a suspension saddle, racer wheels (lightweight to help with acceleration), 1.2" slick tyres (for speed) and a hooter (for warning other road users of my huge presence - I'm 4'6", 19 stone). I have two major hates at the moment. One is badgers, the other is traffic lights. The other day I was riding down a steep hill outside my house, at the bottom there is traffic lights. I could see they were green so I put an extra burst of speed in and just as I got to the bottom, the lights changed to red. I jumped ofF my 250mm of rear wheel travel and let my new Shimano shoes (they have cleats and everything)drag along the floor, to try and stop me. However I left it to late and had the duel agony of my groin sliding down my top tube to the stem, which hurt a little bit, followed by sliding out in front of an HGV crossing the junction, that is why traffic lights suck ass.
